I'm too skint to join the gym, so thought I will do it at home instead. Mates will sell me one of them bycycle-walking-push-pull thingys for cardio,so all I need are some weights, and had a look around and can't quite decide between these two - they have the same weight but are different material. Is the price difference going to have any noticeable effect?

Have a look for an olympic bar and weights, you will very quickly outgrow that set if you are even remotely serious.

If you hunt round the net you will find them cheaper I'm sure but......

Olympic weight set

Honetly mate 50kg is not very much at all, I've been there and made that mistake.

I have the cast iron set, and i agree with above poster - you do outgrow it very quickly. Good piece of equipment, though the spinlocks on mine get loose very easily.

My god man go with set one!

Make up your own set from Here

All I can do is echo the above statements really...although an olympic set isn't needed IMHO.I have a 6ft standard 1in diameter bar and 160kg of marcy plates and there's still room for more on the bar.

Just dont get a vinyl set if you intend to take training remotely seriously at all :D

Oh and don't forget to budget for a bench too..you'll quickly run out of things to do with just a barbell :D

At £139.99, it absolutely is not. It's a great buy, and totally future proof.

ExRayTed, I would not fancy squatting 160kg crammed on a 1 inch thick bar.

Lol..why not? The bar will easily take it and it doesn't hurt my neck (although I have to use a rolled up towel..sod doing it wthout it :D )

Olympic sets are totally future proof though I'll give you that. It's just perhaps overkill for someone just starting out when a standard set will last him 5 years or more.Although for £139 you really can't go wrong providing the OP has that sort of cash.

Finished my year at a daft LA Fitness (thank god, truely pap), I had a look at getting my own stuff, by the time I had a bench, some free weights a squat rack and a olympic set, I could go my local gym for over 3 years at £20 a month which aint too busy, and has all the right stuff. So I will just do that, its a bit more social also.

Dont be fooled by these £45 a month gyms (I was, ooh sauna! lol), they are generally full of idiots who have no Idea what they are doing, go to a nice simple gym that someone has opened, mine is run by 2 bodybuilders and they really know what they are doing and enjoy what they do, it makes the difference, and its half the price! :D
