Which will be fastest?

Which will be fastest between these two CPUs, at stock speeds:
P4 1.5GHz (Willamette, FSB400, L2 Cache 256KB)
Celeron 2.4GHz (Northwood, FSB400, L2 Cache 128KB)

I know for a fact the Celeron overclocks to about 3GHz, but not sure what the P4 does - I'm considering buying it at the moment.

celeron. just. but a 2.4 p4 is generally faster than just about an ~3ghz+ celeron that isn't a celeron D. surely you can find a cheap p4 northwood and clock that instead

I think I'm lured be the £15 price tag.

So you're saying the P4 will not be able to over-power the Celeron (at stock, not at 3GHz) and is not worth buying?

I'll have a rummage around 'that' auction site, and see what I can find.

what do they clock like if they clock at all?

not very far from memory. I think they were all socket 423 as well, which may be a problem trying to get hold of parts now

Well I have a s478 1.5ghz /256/400 1.75v
sl59v costa rica

any ideas on this chip?

You can get both Socket 478 and 423 Willamette P4s

They aren't good CPUs. Slow and bad clockers - the Celeron is better

Even a 1.2GHz Athlon could beat a 1.7GHz Willamette P4
