Is there any fundamental differences from ultimate to say home premium?

The only thing I do use on ultimate that isn't available on premium is backing up to a network location, but that is solved by mapping network drives anyway.

Any info appreciated, especially if you know where to get your recommended version of windows cheapest.

As far as im aware there wont be a difference between the version in terms of gaming. Just make sure you get the right type (64bit if using more than 4GB of RAM)

You've answered your own question really :)

Unless you use the extra features of Ultimate on a regular basis... it's money down the pan.. Just get a RETAIL version of Home Premium and your good to go.

Source wise ... you'll have to look yourself.... forum rules mean we can't link to competitors for pricing

You have enough posts for Members Market access :)

As above, as long as your not using Starter Edition you should be fine.

I upgraded from Home Premium to Ultimate and as far as I can tell there are no difference, except Ultimate comes with a few extras and will accept more RAM

you probably wont use any of the additional features of Ultimate over Premium (DirectAccess, Bitlocker, Domain Join etc), as before, just get home premium

I had no idea they where ram limited. Cheeky of Microsoft to do that, very cheeky.

Thank god the days when you 'require' 16gb of ram to play games is a long way off!

They do this sort of crap with every edition of windows as a stupid marketing scam. End of the day, the only difference between each version of 7 as far as I can tell is just what is and is not enabled, and this justifies prices from £80 to £300

If BF3 worked on linux I'd be running that :D

If you run a lot of older software then one good thing about the professional and ultimate editions of windows 7 is 'Windows XP mode'. This is not available in home premium but you can create something very similar using vmware player and a windows XP disc.

"Once you satisfy both of these criteria" which I have done for a while now, "access will be granted within 24hrs", I don't recall been given access, nor can I see any sign of it in the forum listings.

Also, fyi, I can and do use the FAQ.

Have you enabled your Trust? Access should then follow within 24 hours.
