I'm currently still using XP on my old gaming computer but on my new build see no reason why I shouldn't use 7.

However, I have no idea what to go for. From what I see Ultimate/Enterprise is overkill for what I do (Games, office, web, standard user really). I will be using 64bit though as I have 8gb of RAM vs my old comp which was 32 bit XP.

I'm sort of torn between home premium and professional. While I think HP will have everything I'll ever use I feel like it's a pain if in the future there's a feature in professional I wish I had.

Thoughts?

Home Premium will be fine.

Professional is aimed at businesses and adds Active Directory Domain support and the XP Mode VM in case you have any badly behaved old apps.

So there's no XP VM on Home Premium? I might grab prof then. I remember the headaches trying to get some old games to run on XP never mind Win 7.

Nope.

It's basically Microsoft Virtual PC so there's no 3D Support that I'm aware of. It's there to run dodgy old business apps that don't like 64-bit Windows.

Tbh, if you cant think which one would be best for you, then you dont need Professional. Normally, you only get proffesional for a specific reason.

Go for Home premium :)

The reason I go for Professional editions is if it ever gets used as a server, you can remote connect to it.

Or you can just stick with HP and get VNC instead.

Though, I'm sure there are some registry tweaks one can make to get around this problem, but don't quote me on it.
