ok so im running windows xp 64 bit and want to upgrade to windows 7 but am a bit confussed about all the different options. so my question is which version should i get?

Home Premium is probably the best.

You can compare the versions at Microsoft.com but for best value / feature ratio HP is fine for most standard home users.

I have a funny feeling he is wondering about wether or not buy the full Retail copy or the OEM copy.

Buy OEM if you plan on keeping your computer mainly the motherboard for as long as you are happy with Windows 7 if your looking at upgrading your motherboard in the near future buy the Retail copy, this allows you to install on as many different computers, the OEM copy is locked to the motherboard.

I have recently bought the OEM copy of Windows Home Premium 64Bit, coming Win Xp 64Bit and I dont plan on upgrading for another couple years on the 775 socket, does everything I need it to do and more just now. Plus I saved about £70 going OEM

Two main things you need to consider if you need Professional; remote login and network backup, otherwise go Home Premium.

It's amazingly quick (and easy) XP used to take a good Hour to Hour n Half to install on my old system. Vista (the original OS on my laptop) took about an hour when I had to re-install. But Win7 HP64, only took about 25 mins maybe Half an hour to install.

At first I thought it had failed, as it was sooo quick, but nope, its on there and its soooo much nicer than any other version of Windows I've used!! :)

Home Premium has a ram limit of 16GB
Pro has remote desktop and domain joining abilities, with a 128GB ram limit

thats exactly what I was just trying to find out (and it seemed hidden on the Windows page for some reason......)

Thank you

(I knew Win 7 had a ram limit for the cheaper versions, and to me 16GB is the sweet spot now ram is so cheap, glad I dont have to go up to Ultimate)
