hi guys, which PCie card would you go for out of these?

YOUR BASKET
1 x Edimax EW-7722In N300 PCI Adapter £17.98
1 x TP-Link 300Mbps Wireless N PCI Express Adapter (TL-WN881ND) £16.99
Total : £38.88 (includes shipping : £3.26).

I'm looking at uprgading my bro's desktop, He has a cheap usb adapter at the moment and it really isn't any good. speed check on a wired connection gives about 19mb download whereas on his its about half a mb. We have a Virgin superhub as the router if that helps. Cheers.

Only one of those is PCIe, the other is PCI.

Before you spend any money have you tried changing wireless channels?

Is the USB adapter on an extension cable? If not you could try it on one and test it in different positions. The signal could be getting blocked by the PC.

If they both had been PCIe I'd have picked the TP-Link as their stuff usually works well enough.

The problem could be with the Superhub. It's infamous for its poor wireless performance.

Hi, thanks for the reply.

I have changed the wireless channel to one not being used nearby or overlapping much and it hasn't helped a huge amount. Ah ok, potentially the router is the main problem then? I'll have to look into that.

The adapter is on an extension cable yeah, it usually has full bars signal strength, just very slow.

To test, I've got the old router set up upstairs.
Connecting to the old router (an old Micradigital b/g) it gets full signal strength, but still gets under half a meg download speeds. The upload speed was even slightly faster :s . Would this imply the adapter is no good as opposed to the modem?

If it's that slow with a strong signal I'd be looking at the adapter. Have you tried reinstalling/updating the drivers? As it's easily portable have you tried it on a different PC?

I've had a go at moving it around and it can get around 1mb/sec now. Still with full signal strength. It might have just been badly placed. If he's happy with that though, at least I can get him something better for christmas! he would be better off with a decent adapter though.

I've moved the old router higher up in a better place and that's improved things as well. Also changed the wireless channel to a different one than the router downstairs. Its up to 3mb/s now :)

Cheers for the help and suggestions.
