I want a router to connect with a (crossover?) cable to the ethernet socket on my motherboard also and wirelessly share the connection with a computer in the loft (which I'll need the PCI card for).

I'd like to use it for my PSP and DS too.

I don't really want to spend more than £100, but want something reliable and fast.

My ISP's Tiscali if that matters.

Hope that makes sense. :)

Thanks.

well there are several packages available where you can buy a router with a usb/pci/pcmcia card. My dad uses a Belkin 7632 v4 router which came with a usb dongle which can be had for a resonable price £60 or so.

Personally I use a speedtouch 510v6 adsl2+ modem/router with a Linksys WRT54GS wireless cable router.

If your not after an ADSL2+ based router I would say that the Linksys WAG54GS and one of the speedbooster pci cards would be your best bet and should allow up to 125Mbps over wireless.

For £100 you should be able to buy at least one router plus a couple of wireless cards so really it is entirely up to you for which networking brand you feel confortable with.

With some experance Belkin wireless gear is quite a pain in the arse to setup, i have a netgear router (DG834G) and my Mac work in harmoney, the missues brings her laptop here with a belkin dongle it was hell to get working. The belkin software interfears with the windows wireless software and they conflict and dont work but you need to install the software for the belkin for the dongle to work ;/ imo netgear + netgear :) belkin + belkin dont mix manufactures not worth the hasstle. thats what i think anyway.

ADSL2+'s LLU like Be and UKOnline right? If so I'd want compatability with that as I'm looking to change ISP sometime fairly soon (I assume ADSL2+ routers are backwards compatable with regular ADSL?).

Netgear and Linksys seem to be the most popular makes so I'd probably go for one of those.

I've had a quick look and the Linksys WAG354G-UK seems to be something like what I'm looking for. Any good?

What about the Netgear DG834PN? Would I notice the difference of 108Mbps compared to the Linksys' 54Mbps? Is it worth the extra £30?

Well if you are looking at a new ISP then you will more than likely get a free wireless router when you sign up or at least one that is at a discounted price which should work perfectly fine.

If you looking for greater than 54Mbps wireless then the netgear should be fine.

The Netgear looks to be the best router to go for then, but what PCI card?

Would a Netgear WG311T 108Mbps or Netgear WPN311 Rangemax be OK?

Does it have to be a Netgear PCI card as those seem and bit pricy. I want something that supports the full speed of the router though.

And to connect the router to the main PC, crossover or patch cable?

If you are wnating to have the wireless at speeds over 54Mbps then you need to get the PCI card from the same maker as the router and make sure it is staed to provide the speeds above 54Mbps. You can not normally mix makers for speeds above 54Mbops as each company does it a slightly different way as there is no formalised standard as yet above the G standard of 54 Mbps. I would recommend Dlink, Speedtouch, Lynksys and Netgear. AT the moment it is not really worth the extra price to purchase the pre N kit I would wait a while on that. Personally I am not a fan of Belkin kit.
