Which would be better value?

Say i could either get a hd 2600xt ddr3 for £55 or a 8600gt for £61. The former being sapphire and the latter unbranded.

1950 pro........oh that wasnt in the list...but i wouldnt buy any in the list or recommend them....sorry for being no help.

The cheapest x1950pro i can find is here at ocuk and its £78 delivered. Thats 53% more expensive than the 2600xt. It just doesnt have the same bang for buck. This card nor the x1950pro would be a long term card in which case, longevity doesnt come into the picture. Even considering that, the lifetime of an x1950pro is not going to be that much longer than a 8600gt or 2600xt.

However, the 8600gt is only 10% more expensive, and seems to perform better in games.

you might want to wait a couple of weeks as ATI are about to bring out the 2900 GT which looks to be priced to take on the 8600 cards and should out perform them.

It will also probably mean a price drop on both the 2600xt and 8600 cards will be imminent as well.

I believe the 2900pro is coming out in january along with the 2650xt. Im afraid thats a long time and i need a card to play HL2:E2 and MOH:Airborne. I really dont mind if i have to play Bioshock at medium settings @ 1280x1024 with no AA.
