At pressent I am running a couple of 4890 in x-fire but find them quite noisy when I am using them. Would I notice any loss in performance or any gain in performance by switching to a single 6970. Also what difference do you notice between directX 10 and directX 11?

You'd get a performance increase from 5% - 20% depending on the game.

Few games are DX11, and the ones that are dont make much use of it's features because too many games are console ports these days. So the game would have been made for obsolete DX9 level hardware, and then maybe of had some DX11 features quickly added to the PC version.

Might be worth it then for a small performance increase now especially if I later get a second card later in the year..
