Which would be the better solution?

I've been wanting to upgrade the speakers on my PC for a while and it's bonus time next month :)

Would I be better getting a PC satellite speaker package or say getting an AV amp (eg Denon) with a set of 5.1 analogue inputs and running some hi-fi satellites?

Just wondering how good PC packages are in comparison?

Cheers!

The AV amp a seperates speakers will naturally be better, but is likely to cost more. What kind of budget are you looking at? If it's around £200, you may have to stick with something like the Z-5500s, but if you can go a bit more you should be able to get a good AV style surround setup. So long as you buy the amp and speakers second hand you should be able to fit a good system in for under £300 :) Also, will you require stands for any of the speakers?

Well, It depends on how much you wanna spend, personally, a good set of computer speakers with a good sound card always works well for me, since all my music is on my computer, so it is a good choice.

However, seperate can be upgraded, however, I've never seen much difference between seperates and a decent set of computer speakers. Just remember, without a good sound card, good speakers can be a waste of cash.

Hehe ;) If you can't hear the difference yourself then there's no point paying for something because someone reckons it's better.

Well you seem to be able to pick up amps fairly cheap from fleabay and KEF's older egg packages are going nice and cheap so I might see if I can get those.

Cheers people. I figured it'd be a better solution. I don't use my PC for music other than as a file server so will be for games and general day to day use.

Since you mention it's not for music and is mainly for games, you really may as well go with Logitech Z-5500's. Games don't require very good quality sound normally (most games i've heard have fairly poor sound quality compared to the quality of film sound). If you can get the eggs for around the same price though, they are sure to be better.
