Afternoon all,

I am in the process of choosing my new company car (after 3 years with a BMW F30 330d) and my available (much reduced list) list is giving me two potentials so would appreciate your thoughts:

Option 1:

A4 Avant 1.4 TFSI SLine Stronic - technology pack included with virtual cockpit (no other options available)

Option 2:

A4 Avant 2.0 TFSI SE Stronic with the following options selected:

Twin leather
Privacy glass (side and rear windows) and Acoustic glass (front side windows)
4-way electric lumbar support
Driver Information System - 7" colour display
MMI Navigation - SD Card Based
Bang & Olufsen 3D Sound System
High line multi function wheel

I am really keen to get back in to a petrol after many diesel years hence the above. I do about 25K business miles with a mixture of motorway/a roads a year so cost of fuel not a major factor. Although I do appreciate more trips to the garage will be required with a petrol.

Avant and auto is a must and clearly both will be a step down in power from my F30 330d (this is my main concern with the 150bhp 1.4 although reviews are mainly very positive). In an ideal world I would be able to choose the 2.0 TFSI in SLine but this falls outside my maximum allowed budget. As does the sport with decent options.

Comfort, good technology and a reasonable turn of speed are my main areas of focus. Cash allowance doesn't add up with the miles and base Mercedes are the only other choice on my list and I am not a fan of those.

So it comes down to better engine with lower spec or lower engine with better spec and arguably better looks.

Going for some test drives this week but which way would you go?!

For 25k a year the 2.0 looks as though the options would make for a considerable more pleasurable experience on longer journeys. Am I right in thinking the Sline has firmer suspension too which may not be as ideal for long trips?

It does although this can be changed to the comfort suspension at no cost. The majority of the options selected on the SE are standard on the Sline plus the technology pack.

Have you calculated the refill range and thus your frequency of trips to the forecourt? You might find, for example, that the 2.0 requires refills every 2 days whereas the 1.4 might be 3 or more.

Fair point although the quoted MPG is similar for both so shouldn't make a noticeable impact.

The SE trim has softer suspension than the S-Line. So go for that if it's for cruising, "sporty" Audi suspension does not iron out UK roads well.

But yea, I'd take option 2 all day long. The virtual cockpit is a gimmick where as option 2 has actual useful things. You won't notice much difference in running costs, but small turbo engines tend to be less smooth.
