I've just been asked this question by a friend and was wondering what others on this forum would recommend. His OS is going to be XP 32bit and his CPU is a Q6600, the main use for his system would be graphics packages/web design and video editing.
Just been looking and reading about RAM and could do with your opinion.

At first I was going to order 2 x 2GB DDR2 PC5300 RAM as a kit from Crucial. Looked in to it and from what I can see the transfer rate between CPU and Memory would have been 5.3 GB’s/Sec. The price was £57. According to some forums Windows XP would probably only utilise between 3GB – 3.5GB RAM, not the full 4GB.

I then looked at 2 x 1GB DDR2 PC8500 Crucial Ballistix which was £54. This had a transfer rate of 8.5GB’s/Sec.

Question is, is it better to have 2GB of RAM which I assume is faster or 4GB which is slower. Don’t fully understand it but the FSB on the 2 x 1GB Ram is 1066Mhz and that appears to be the max according to the motherboard spec without going to DDR3. I think the 2 x 2GB is 667Mhz.

What would you recommend?

I’m leaning towards the 2 x 1GB DDR2 PC8500 Crucial Ballistix for his options or do you think these would be better?

I'd more than likely lean towards maxing out the 32bit memory limitations and get 4GB.

What CPU will this be going with, will there be any overclocking?

No point in getting PC8500 memory really if you're not clocking.

It's a Q6600 he is getting and he will not be overclocking it.

That's why I was thinking the Corsair 4GB DDR2 XMS2 PC2-6400C5 TwinX may be the better option.
