I currently have a Radeon 9600XT 256mb which is starting to show the strain on current games ie Half Life 2 etc so am looking at the below cards to upgrade to. Obviously the more expensive cards are going to run quicker but will the difference be that great ? Looking at the X1900 there is a £60 difference between top & bottom that I have pulled out - but is the extra worth it?

I haven't got an open wallet but would like some help in pointing me in the right direction.

Cheers guys

Either the MSI 7900 GTO (on this week only atm) or the HIS X1900XT. Neither will disappoint from all accounts.

The X1900GT has only 3/4 of the pipelines of the XT, so the XT is considerably better. The 7900 GTO is basically a GTX with lower clock speeds. You can always increase the clock speeds, but you can (almost) never add/reactivate pipes (certainly not if they were never there in the first place!).

If you can spend as much as £145 (£170 with VAT) then your two choices are probably the X1900 XT 256MB or the 7900 GTO 512 MB (both the best out of what you've listed). If you aren't going to overclock the GTO back to GTX speeds (memory from 1320 -> 1600 MHz) then probably best stick with the XT for the same money. If you are going to overclock it using coolbits/atitool etc then it's 50/50. Theres been a lot of discussion on the comparison of these two cards on the forums just do a search for "7900 GTO"

My GTO is arriving tomorrow :D

It's a bargain on this week only!

There are no pipes to unlock on the 7900GTO, it is a full GTX just with lower clocks.
