I've been using onboard sound for a while now, and from what I gather the Xonar is the best price/performance card around just now.

I'm going to be hooking it up to a pretty decent amp/speaker/cd player/turntable setup, and I listen to absolutely tons of music, and of course gaming is a big part of it.

What are the "real world" differences between the DX, D2, and DX2? I've got a spare PCI-E slot, so if I thought the DX2 was going to be the one, it wouldn't be a hassle. Of course, if someone thinks there is a better card in the same ballpark, I would love to hear it.

I think the DX2 and D2 are identical, only difference is the DX2 is pci-express which can be put in any pci-express slot and requires a floppy power connector. The DX is just a smaller version, but probably will still give it very good quality audio.

It really depends on what interface you require. If you have a spare PCI slot then i would go for that.
