For some reason when i play games i got a whiny sound coming out of my system not high pitched. (It's like a small motor, but not a case fan)
Its like a really small fan was spinning really fast and it depended on where i looked in the game (like the floor or a grassy area it would be louder or quieter)
This usually happened when i played Guild Wars with my ASUS 8800GT.

I got my GTX 260 today and the sound got a lot louder and it makes that sound in every game i play and as soon as i minimize the game window it goes away.

It doesn't sound like my gpu fan since even at 100% it makes a nice hum not a whiny annoying sound.

I hope its my CPU fan speeding up or something and not some power coil or whatever people have problems with in their GPU.

EDIT : The sound seems to be coming from my PSU i think.

to check if its the cpu or gpu fan put your finger in it briefly to stop it and see if the noise stops. If its your PSU it may be its on its way out :(

+1 for the psu on the way out... best to take your comp apart and re build out of the case you can easily pin point the whine noise then..

another suggestion if you cant hear the whine noise try listening to the case fans..depending on how old your case fans are.. the bearings tend to whine a little..

It doesn't necessarily mean its on its way out but it could, Google capacitor squeal, or capacitor squeal PSU / 260 etc and see if any of these sound right.
