having spent some money on a quiet psu, good case fans/cpu fan etc, im beginning to think the whirring noise and general vibration sort of sounds are simply coming from my case. its an antec case, but it wasnt all that expensive when i got it a few yrs ago now.
from experience, do you guys think it could possibly be the case thats making my pc sound a lot noisier than it actually is?

yeah ive already did that but there doesnt seem to be a lot of noise coming from the case fans, Im honestly failing to see/hear where this noise is coming from. Part of me thinks its just because it a cheap case?
nothing much else in the case makes a hell of a lot of noise, yes i can still here this whirring/vibration noise.

Whilst the system is running, try holding the case panels one at a time to see if theyre vibrating. Try the same with the hdd bays. My old akasa eclipse used to suffer from vibrating side panels. Tightening the screws a bit helped to stop this.

Sorry, I mean the actual heatsink on top of the CPU, stock ones can be loud, which is why (along with reducing temps) people put better ones on with larger fans that rotate slowly and still perform well.

yeah thats still the stock one. i think i may have found whats causing it though.
my 3TB drive. thing is , i need that in there. this pc is for work and being a photographer i need that drive in there.
i turned it off for a bit, just running my SSD OS and what a difference it made. perhaps i could pick up a better, quieter 3TB drive?
I dare say a better heatsink/fan would also bring it down more

You'd be surprised what difference a ghetto bungee mod makes. Vibrations from hard drives can resonate right through a case. I had a Samsung 1TB which, even though mounted originally on silicone washers, still managed to make my supposed quiet case thrumm.

Try removing the drive from its cage and putting it on some foam or something and see what difference it makes. If its a difference get the drive isolated by bungee cord or similar.

Yeah it makes a bit of difference having it sit outside the case, will have to look into something. Sometimes it's ok , the next minute it makes noises.
If only we had 3-4tb ssd's, or quieter hdd's
:-)

Well you can get a 3.2TB SSD for around £12,000 if you fancy one, you'll need a spare PCI-e slot though. :)

Quieter hard drives tend to be slower as they have a 5,400rpm, or slower, spindle speed rather than 7,200rpm.

Lol, I'll pass on that ssd for the time being :-)
I'm going to look into bungie cords or something. Can you recommend where to get this sort of stuff in the uk?
Some of the mods look good just wondering whether I have the space ( and holes ) to do it.
Thanks

Get two squash balls, cut them in half and screw them into the bottom mounts on the HDD. Sit the contraption on the bottom of the 5.25" bay or bottom of case, wherever there's enough room :)
