Whistling Noise on New Build

Hi guys,

I received a pre built system off overclockers today, the "Liberator x6" with an SSD installed. Iv just installed windows 7 and before I installed any games I noticed what appears to be a whistling noise coming from the PC which can fluxuate in volume. It starts after about 5-10 seconds of turning on the pc.

Is there something I can do to stop this? I really don't want to have to send this back and wait a week or more.

Edit: the noise is even while idle on desktop.

Thanks,

The first thing I'd do is try and establish where the noise is coming from. Is it coming from the motherboard, the power supply, the graphics card etc?

Take the side off. Slow down fans individually by pressing finger on fan centre (not through blades) see if that reduces removes whistling.

See if it is the PSU.

Look for any packaging bits left in or cables touching fan parts etc.

After listening it appears the noise is coming from the fan/big heat sink area. I tried slowing the fan but it doesn't make much difference. Also looked for spare loose parts but can't find any. My apologies if my descriptions seem a bit odd, I don't know much about computers which is why I bought a pre built one.

Iv tried again and when the fan slows from from slightly putting pressure on it reduces.

Would you recommend trying to stop the fan completely for a second to see if it stops? I'm hesitant to do anything like that without confirmation incase I break something

From your description it sounds like one possibility is that a sticker on the fan centrepiece may be a bit loose. That's one thing that can cause the whistling as it brushes on something.

Tried stopping the fan with the technique mentioned. As soon as the fan stops so does the noise. However as soon as the fan starts to move the whistling comes back (even when the fan moves slowly for the first second). Does this mean its definitely the fan or could it be something else. The whistling goes up and down randomly, almost as if its an electrical based sound.

It's the fan. Call and get it sorted. Your computer isn't about to explode or anything, it's mainly an annoyance. Longer term it could lower the life of the fan.
