I think its personal taste thing...on a 911 GT3, Exige, or Focus RS, certainly.
On a base model BMW or Audi repmobile...less sure. I think on more basic cars it'll go out of fashion eventually and be as unpopular as it was in the early 2000s and late 1990s.
I will add though that some companies have a fantastically dull range of colours at present, look at what colours you can get the F10 5 series in, essentially a very dull collection of greys, dark blues, bronzes, and silvers. In a show room a white car will stand out far more. It seems only the M5 gets a decent colour choice (that blue) unless you go for the expensive 'individual' option.
