White Macbook issues with HD

I've got a friend's Macbook here and she has asked if I can have a little look at it. Basically the HD is stuffed. It's clicking and doesn't boot into the O/S. I finally managed to get the keyboard off the flipping thing after several videos and 100 screws (so it seems). What's the best way to deal with this do you think? Replacement drive, and rebuild it from there? is there any way I can caddy the drive, or get the photos off of it for her?

How do I go about rebuilding the O/S for her once I have replaced the drive? I'm not overly familiar with Apple, hence the questions.

TIA!

You will need to create a bootable MacOS installer. A white Macbook probably isn't supported on the latest MacOs (Sierra), so you may have to take it into an Apple store to get hold of the older installer. Newer Macs can reimage themselves off the Internet.

Macs can also boot off USB drives, so plugin a spare drive, and see if you can get it booting off that (you still need to figure out how to install MacOs).

Okay so today the SSD has been installed. I have a copy of the Snow Leopard O/S and when I go to install it constantly fails telling me there is an issue copying the support files. Has anyone come across this before?
