White SG09 with power and watercooling

Hello, ones again

So my latestet build; Unobtainable was a great PC to build, and it got a lot of positive feedback, thanks guys and girls

But my eager to create something new, and also a (hopefully) better looking build.
So I will hope you will follow this build as well, and please; positive criticism is always welcome, so dont hold back

First of I would once like to thank Fractal Design for sponsoring the Newton R3 1000W White PSU.


But to the main part; Building a kick ass looking SG09 with a lot of watercooling.

So first of the SG09 case. A really small case produced by Silverstone, but still space enough for a mATX and SLI, and hopefully for my ideas of watercooling
Just a quick picture for you that haven't seen it yet (more to come later):

Most people doesn't really like the front of the case (which also seems why Silverstone have made SG10).
But I see opportunities, so hopefully it will turn out better after it have been painted.
And you guessed it right, there isn't sold any white SG09 case, so I will spray paint the hole case (because I like white cases ).

About the internal hardware, it's going to be a powerfull rig but not extreme (just yet).
It's going to be a Intel I7 3770k, 16gb of RAM, a Rog Maximus Gene IV Z some Intel SSD and of course two lovely GPU's;

Two nice Evga GTX 670 +SC 4gb cards. Reason that I chosen those two cards, you will understand later

All the watercooling blocks will come from EKWB, since I really like their continues CSQ design on all the blocks and that it's Plexi tops to see the water flow though and give a nice "show" effect.

I got almost all the parts, so the build can begin. However, my time is limited, so please be patient, I want this build done as fast as you (but still looking awesome).

Actually a nice big package came today, but still missing a lot more
The package contains a lot of nice things;
Two nice D5 pumps with Plexi tops.

Reservoirs with a lot of lighting options

Some nice radiators from both Phobya (200mm) and two 120mm fra alphacool.

Thise will also get colored to fit the theme of white and Green (white frame and green fins).

Some tuping;

Really like these tupes, because the are really flexible which is nice in a small case

And a lot of other nice products from Phobya (temp sensor, lightning, pump silence and some radiator shrouds) that would get in this build;

It's a lot of hardware and watercooling to get into this small build, which means challenges, but I got a plan :sneaky:

So the next thing for this build is to recieve the last products (some watercooling parts and sleeving from MDPC-x), and then get going with installation and modding.

And then afterwards the painting of all the parts will begin to get the build look great and unique in the green and white theme

And I also got a little surprise, but more on that later on.

Yea, there is some challenge to this build, but isn't that what makes it fun to mod?

So a bit of update, again it's a bit slow cause of my limited time, but I will get there with an awesome end result, promise
First of the GPU's got them a make over:

The card alone. A really small card but still very powerfull.

Now imagine that these get colored white and the rings becomes green
And green water running though those nice looking EKWB plexi nickel blocks

I also got a nice package inculding some sleeving, pre-cut heat shrink and a crimping tool.

The last shipment of watercooling parts should come soon, just waiting for those good looking Monsoon fittings

Im going to be honest, im not a fan of that case but that's why ill be keeping my eye on this thread..

By the sounds of it, you may be able to make this a pretty System. Good luck to you and your CRAZY ideas.

I'm looking forward to seeing how this build goes, the SG09 is a fugly case, but i'm sure you can pull the cat out of the bag on this and make it look nice!

At first I wasn't that happy about it either, liked Prodigy better overall. But I do believe that is could turn out great, just need to take the time to focus on all the small details

Excited about seeing how this goes. I'm planning of doing a build in the SG10 when it comes out but it would be nice to see what this case is capable of!

If I would just build a more regular silence air cooled build, SG10 would be my choice currently, becaurse it looks way better with that front

The backplates look great on the cards, and a good little build by the looks of it.

First installation of the hardware and pumps in the case

There isn't that much to say. You should begin to see what my plan is with this build according to fitting it all in that small case

IT FITS!
yea, I was worried about fitting the pumps like this, but with a few mm to spare, that was no problem.

Really love those pumps, but I might change the top to plexi EKWB CSQ, to fit the theme of CSQ blocks.
But, many things can still happen. Might even change the GPU's to something stronger

At the left 120mm fan one of the alphacool radiator will be installed.
The 200mm Phobya radiator will get installed un top of the 180mm fan. So it's going to be outside the case.

The left side of the case (the one you see from on the above picture) will get as much window as possible to show of this nice view

So here some more detailed pics:

My plan was to watercool the RAM aswell, however that may not be possible, since it will get to high and block for the reservoirs :-/

Really looking forward getting them painted. They will look so nice

A sad story though; I will be away from the build the next month
However, when I return, I got more time to work on this build

So back from my trip, and I had a package waiting for me
It was Fractal Design's new Newton R3 1000w white PSU, that Fractal Design have sponsored this build with

Only thing is that they have lowered the value of when the fan starts spinning from 50% to only 25%.
Perhaps some of the PSU's got to hot under 500W, but still a nice feature which I have wanted to make the system as quiet as possible

It also features a white fan (perfect), but it's frame is black, but that's easy to color.

It's only semi modular, it's okay, but it would have been easier with at fully modular design.
Also it would have made it look extra nice with white sleeving and all white connectors, if some one wanted a hole white build, but couldn't do sleeving

So installed in the case, it looks a little odd with all the black, but when I get the case colored, it will look just awesome
Also really nice with the ********* on the back, in general it would be more visuel if painted light blue. But white is fine to this build, but it won't really be possible to see

Overall, a really nice 1000w Platinum PSU, that with it's 165mm lenght and white color fits just perfect in this build.

Tomorrow I will go buy the dremel so that the holes for windows, tupes, sensors and so on can be cut before getting case painted

So, Im sorry for the wait, my time is very limited at the moment -_-
I have though made a little progress;

First of, some nice big windows have been cut out with the new dremel.

There will of course be installed some Plexi class in those
Not sure, if it should be with glue or some screws or rivets...

Also, the case have been taken apart, and the painting have begun;
First the parts have been getting a little sandpaper love
And then a white primer;

Second the white color. How ever I not done yet (ran out of paint).

And sadly it began running a little on the plastik front;

but it's easy to fix, just a sand it down, and begin painting again.

I still have some fans, radiators and reservoirs to paint.

There have also been a small change to the loop and pumped use, so I now can watercool the RAM aswell with the EKWB CSQ Nickel Plexi blok I got.
Will look good with some white LED in all those EKWB parts

So, it have been a while since I updated you last.
not becourse I didn't want to, there just haven't been anything to update you about.
But that have changed, and I got more time in these days, so the speed of this build will increase

Today, the last layer of paint got on the case and once Again in one piece;

I really love how this case looks in White, and can't wait to get this build finished

In the two holes in the top, two temp sensor/displays will get installed. Sadly, it will be the only thing not White or green, since they have a blue screen :-/


I also got to be creative with the backplates for the GPU:

The top rings, didn't turn out that great since I used a small brush, but once I changed to a pencil it got a lot better (the ugly once will not be visible once installed in the case). Both are done, you will see the result on the GPU's tomorrow

What I hope to get done tomorrow is;
1) Buy Platisk 70 and get the motherboard painted

2) Installed all the hardware in the case to measure where to fit rads and reservoir + pump and drill the holes for those.

3) Measure cable lenght and begin sleeving

I will hopefully get time to update you tomorrow aswell (Also got a nice big package from Aquatuning.de, containing the last Things, which I will show tomorrow aswell).

Until then, I'm still missing a cool name for this project, any ideas?

now if only it had an sg10 front panel instead of the sg09 ugly one

I actually like the SG09 front better than the SG10. Even more when in White.

It has clear water blocks/pumps like ice , its white like snow, it contains water, its sort of cube shape and you have that really nice ********* impression on the base of the PSU

Hm, not bad. But it doesn't really fit with the green color. Then it should have been a light blue one
So if the greenish color some how can get into that name, we might have some

It have been raining here in DK, so painting haven't been a option until yesterday (sorry for the delay)..

So, I have actually been rather busy these days.
First of a lot more painting. Got the rads finished uo quite nicely:

But also some smaller stuff in the build.
And also a more challanging one; the motherboard.
First taping all the useable parts in (socket, RAM, PCI and so on).
Then getting the worst dust away with some compressed air.
Bought some Platisk 70 and got going with it (insulation) and after that the non conductive paint.
Here is the first look:

Then off with the tape and on with a Little CPU cooler, and only one RAM stick.
AND WE HAVE BOOT
Then one with a GPU to test aswell (didn't want to kill that if the board went on fire. I had some Water ready to kill out any flames )
BUT BOOT aswell:

The with all the RAM and two GPU, and still with at BOOT.
I haven't went into Windows just yet. Only to the UEFI on the board, but everything seemed fine, SSDs detected
Hopefully it will stay that way.

But still having some red spots on the motherboard, I began the many hour long proces for painting green.

I have also manage to get some sleeving done (CPU and ATX). And I have got a lot of it installed in the case.

BUT enough talk, hope you enjoy:

I just had to take some shots of them:

Back to the build, I went away with my first idea of the D5 pumps, and over to the Swiftech PWM controlled DDC and the EKWB res. First I would lay it Down horisontal, but a test showed that the Water wasn't flowing that great in that position (which EKWB also tells to leave it vertikal). So up it goes.

The change from D5 pumps and res on the PSU is due to room. With two reservoirs on the PSU, I would have had to use some low profile RAM with no Watercooling. But this changed that so now the RAM get's watercooled aswell. Also thinks the EKWB res looks awesome in White (still need the paint the rings green)

To the right of the pump (in the open Space up front), three Intel X25-M 160gb will get installed. Filling up the Space and looking good (will also get some paint)
Also getting great cooling from that 80mm fan that will get installed behind them.

Next up is to paint the ********* on the PSU green, install a White filter in the front and install radiators. Then to figure out how the loop should run.

My time the next three and a half weeks is limited due to exams, so only small Things will get done on this project.
BUT im stilling looking for a great name.
Best right now is "Green Ice Cube"

Really like this build, what sort of paint do you use on the mobo?

First a Plastik 70 to insulate and the a non condutive plastick paint.
Seems to Work just fine

Motherboard warranty = gone
Motherboard re-sale value = £0

Isn't there now a much higher likelihood of something on the board overheating?

That said, it does look fantastic so far. Just a little baffled by the painted motherboard

Well, just to set it in perspektive;
The only thing in this build that will have warrenty left when im done is;
CPU, GPU's and the monsoon fittings

love the painted mobo, i wanted to do similar myself, but really dont know what paint to use, whether it would work or not, or how to go about doing i, so much respect for jumping in with both feet and having a go!

pff... who keeps a warranty on anything now? all mine have gone out of the window except the graphics card !!

also, the resale value could be just as high, if he finds someone else who wants a white and green build.... besides, ive never sold any of my computer stuff, it goes in the loft and hides there till i find a use for it (i never will, but i cant get rid of it, it was once my pride and joy!!!)

Well the motherboard is bought used, and is "old" now (no warrenty left anyway), so I thought; why not try.
If it doesn't Work, I will wait until the Asus Z87 Gryphon comes out and the spraypaint it's shield White. (a bit more safe to do).

Due to the risk, I will not paint the GPU's. To much Money and warrenty at stake.

I have looked and I can't see anywhere you have mentioned it so I am just wondering what is the case like?

I am looking at either this one and using my current MATX mobo etc or going to ITX and getting the Prodigy or something and I was just wanted to get your thoughts on it?

Well, I depends on a few Things;
Do you need mATX (SLI support, soundcard etc)?
Are you to carry it around much?

Personally I overall like the SG09/10 (what ever front you like best) better than the Prodigy. Why?:
- Smaller, not much, but it's smaller.
On one hand they have still pushed a mATX and up to 160mm PSU in the case along the use of some very long GPU's.
The support for 3.5" HDD, are though smaler (2 vs 5 in the Prodigy), but I rarely see persons having more that 2 3.5" HDDs in a gaming rig.

Silence/airflow:
SG09710 wins here Again imo. The 180mm fan in the top along a Silverstone Heligon H02 you get a passive cooler for the CPU (but still a 700 rpm 180 at top, but it's very silent. If you wanted more silent a PWM 180 can be bought, or the AP182 (Down to 500 rpm)).

As for airflow around the GPU's SG09 also to me seems to be better due to the many fan options directly around it. I actually believe this is a good case for SLI/crossfire with blower stile GPU's.

But the Prodigy also got some nice features, as handels, MAC looking (if you like that), optional window side panel for the GPU, and most of all; much easier to do custom watercooling inside (trust med on that ).

So which to take depends on once needs.
If I didn't wanted to do watercooling (at all exept maybe a H70 or something like that), Price and looks didn't matter to much, I would get the SG09/10 + a PWM 180 fan and the Heligon H02.
I see the SG09/10 as more "future prof" if you one day want a second GPU (room and better cooling) and to some sense more silent (I do believe the GPU's will have better cooling = lower RPM), but the CPU cooler can be just as quiet in both cases.

If you go to many LAN parties, want to show of the installed HW, want to do watercooling, I would get the Prodigy. It a really nice case for such Things, and comes in many colors, and people in general thinks it looks great (can't say the same about a Black SG09).

If any more questions, please dont hold back

Looking really good, it does look better with the white and green mobo but no sure I could go through with it myself.

As for a project name, how about 'Chilled Hulk'?

Edit: Actually thinking about it, could also have 'Iced Hulk' or 'Frosted Hulk' too.

Well, Iced Hulk, is not so bad, but normally people think "big" when thinking about hulk.

I got one from SWEclockers forum; "Arctic Reactor"
Which I think is quite nice, the arctic meaning the White snow, and the green parts and Water as the reactor (which isn't green in reality, but people tends to look at it that way)
And just like a reactor it got a lot of power (but the build is using power instead of generating it though).
But people also tends to see reactor as something big, so perhaps; Arctic Mini Reactor??

I was thinking hulk as green and powerful but you are right suggests something big. Artic Reactor isn't a bad name, better than my other thought of 'Snotcycle'

If you don't like Reactor as it suggest big, could go for something more like 'Artic Fusion' or 'Cold Fusion'

I do see Fusion as a possible better option (far better from 'SnotCycle')

I am going to be going to Uni soon which is why I want a little machine so I can take it with me when I am living there then bring it home on the train etc when I come home.

I am certainly sold on either the SG09 or SG10. I will wait and see what price the SG10 comes out at then decide if the nicer looking front is worth the extra

With regards to cooling, I have only ever used the stock OEM cooler so I am not really looking at water cooling. Something like a H70 etc does sound nice and I may go for one when I buy my case. Depends how the bank account is feeling

I think the Price will be a Little higher on the SG10, but not much.
But as i see it the front is now some really thick alu = extra weight.

About cooler; if you got some high profile RAM, then a watercooler is best.
But low profile, I would tend to the Heligon HE02 (no possible pump noise and the 180mm fan is the cooling fan instead of a 120mm) weight is though a bit higher.

Hi Guys, sorry it have been such a long time since my last update, but due to Holidays it have been more difficult to get the last parts (which isn't even here yet).

But I got some new information to share;
First of to those who questioned the painted motherboard;

I had it out of the case and tested the board with a H100 and the GPU's on air along the RAM and sleeved PSU.
And it worked just fine, even in stress tests and I did game in quite some time that night

Other than that I got the two radiators installed as well;

(not the best picture, sorry for that)

Once again the Moonson fittings just fits perfectly with the green and white colors

Other than that, I waiting on some parts to get shipped.
The motherboard and CPU will get upgraded to an I7 3930k and Rampage IV Gene (will also get colored white and green).
This upgrade is due to the low bandwidth on the current card (only PCI-e 2.0 x8) which is a bottleneck with the 3xU2711 resolution.

GPU power will also get upgraded, which cards and who many is still in question.
I will update you once again, when new parts arrive

OOH, also, I am looking at building a waterchiller from some 380w TEC (not final yet)
And the CPU it self will also get a TEC to cool it to even lower temps to get higher OC

Hi, I'm sorry that I haven't posted for some time, but there haven't been that much to post about, since my time have been very limited, and the free time have been used to get another "chilling" project up and running with some TECs.

The following was planed for the SG09 build long ago to get some lower temps when at home, but still able to travel with the case without this big side show

And yes, that is a Phobya External Radiator "Bench edition" stand, along with a D5 pump in a EKWB X-RES 140mm housing that have been spray painted white.
The stand only comes in black, and I ran out of paint on a Saturday, and haven't come much further since
BUT it will get painted just as white as all the rest
Then pump will also get a slap of paint. Not sure if I should go green on it or white like the rest.
(what do you think?)

On the other side we got a 9x120mm radiator that is 45mm thick, along the 120mm fans from Antec

I think that the plexi fans are looking really well with the rest, and I will look much better when the radiator stand will get all white.
The fans (there are 47 more of the) are towards the TEC experiment and was sponsored by Antec along some other stuff like a lot of thermal paste.
So a big thanks to Antec

Another package came this Friday including some of the best looking fittings right now (I do to think that acrylic tubing and fittings looks nice, but for me Monsoon fittings and their colors are stuff )
So thanks to Monsoon for sponsoring some fittings for the chiller project

If we take a closer look at the pump/reservoir, you can see that it's not normal water cooling water that is running round in the little loop.

I have always liked the way that some colorful crystals was floating around in a liquid up in chemistry lap.
But most of those crystals was either expensive or very toxic
So when I saw that Mayhems had made a similar product for watercooling, I new I had to have it.
The liquid is Mayhems Green Aurora.
(pump settings was "1" = the lowest)

But the Aurora is not ideally for this chiller experiment, so when that time comes, I will have found something more suitable.
The Aurora is for the looks in the SG09 build
Not sure if it will work as planed due to the may 90 degrees fittings, radiators and blocks, but I have to test right
Also to me it is a little to white, so I will properly get a green dye to make it a bit darker (if it works).

Doesn't those beautiful Monsoon fittings deserve a picture in focus?, I do believe so

Now before we end this update, some of you may think; "that painting will get you higher temps".
And yes, that is correct, BUT the SG09 builds hardware (it will maximum become two R9 290 and a I7 3930k) doesn't really require a radiator like that (I think the 180mm and 120mm rad should do the job), but I really like silence (or my girl does), so I got the radiator just to be sure (it will get quick release fittings so that when going for a Lan, it's easy to disconnect, and I think the two other rads will cool the setup just fine ).

As for the chiller, one of these is clearly not enough for the amount of heat I will put into that loop (properly around 4000W).
But more on that in the other thread

Next is to get a new PWM DDC pump (the other one burned on me) and get the things installed and hooked up to the loop (needs a few holes to drill) and get the plexi glass windows cut out and installed.
Also some sleeving needs to be done

Hi all

Now with Christmas over and exams, I'm once again back to hopefully finish this build and the TEC cooler.
Also Happy New Year

This update isn't a big one, but I am in need of your help

First of, I got the plexi for the window cut out.

Just like the windows for my Unobtainable, these have been cut down at the edge a little mm, so that plexi has a smooth transition from the case to the window.
It turned out just fine last time, and hopefully just at great this time
(will get them install tomorrow).

About the help;
As an above post, I'm doing a TEC chiller, and to do that I need some sort waterblock for the TECs.
Currently I got this designed;

This will be in copper and it is 6mm high (with the squares 4mm(height)x2mmx2mm) and will get a acrylic top.
I'm not at big water flow engineer, so if you got any ideas for at better water block for the TECs, please let me know (you can see more at the TEC thread)

I actually doesn't have any more today (will get the windows installed tomorrow)


Also, I just wanted to share my parents dog in it's sleeping position last weekend (she was really far away in dreamland )

Long time since, and a lot have been done

But pictures says more than words so here we go:

The pictures and lightning is not perfect, due to my apartment is under reconstruction so my usually photo spot is filled up with boxes.
So it looks better in real life, especially the mayhems aurora looks really cool and still going strong even though there is many 90 degrees fittings.
May look after their new version 2.0 of the aurora.

I would have liked to have the whole build watercooled for you, but the EKWB waterblock + back plate for the GFX has been delayed a bit :-/
Even though the new EKWB back plates are plan simple, I will add the original CSQ circles to it to color them green like the GTX 670 from earlier.

So there is a lot of small stuff that needs to be fixed before it's done.
The PSU will get back in (used in a mining rig right now) and the last wires sleeved.
Some small spots needs to get repainted again and a few new things painted to.
Also some temperature sensors will get installed on top (green LED).
Pump may be changed to a D5 PWM pump instead if there is room for it

My original plan was to use a EKWB DDC X-res 100 under the PSU, but my measurements where 2mm of :-/
I then remembered a mod where the reservoir was on top the case, and thought that would look good with the aurora (which for me it does).
Though the reservoir could be 3 cm longer so that I could use 90 degrees fittings (more clean look), but the tube will be placed along the sides of the 180mm radiator with some clips to look more clean.

So I hope you like the looks so far, I believe it will become even better when the GFX will get watercooled and all the small stuff will get made
And perhaps a GFX more

(The other side with the big window is done, but cant be installed due to bad/low placement of the RM750 PSU power input).

As for painting motherboard, I did not believe in it ever working again after the paint, but it's still functioning just fine.
I was thinking about getting the Rampage IV Gene and a 6 core CPU for the build, but I didn't dare painting such an expensive motherboard (I got the current quite cheap)
