Noticed a few of these popping up and replacing the amber light ones. I don't really understand why they are changing them though? The idea behind amber light is that it doesn't dazzle/glare, whereas these white light ones are a nightmare.

What drug is the council smoking?

I don't know what they're thinking. First they start replacing all the traffic lights with smaller ones that you can't see when you're off at an angle or if the sun is remotely behind them, then all round London they start taking down the lights over the other side of the junction so if you're at the front you can't see the lights changing, then they start relaying all the roads in tarmac that MELTS in the summer and the roads are like a grease bath and then they start replacing the light up bollards with plain metal ones that I can't see in the dark. I think they are forgetting those things were implemented in the first place for a reason

Are they lamps or LED units they're fitting?

Doesn't make sence to replace the sodium with metal halide untis, they cost more (more parts)

Look like large white bulbs, kinda hard to tell though, I try to look where im going rather than at the lights. They dont half make you squint though.

They've fitted these awful pale yellow/white street lights on a section of carriageway near me and they're horrid. I suffer quite badly from headlight glare as it is at night but these are even worse.

The reason given by the council in the local rag is they're "long-life" units and so cost less in maintenance over the year.

Shame about my retinas :(

You aren't in the council budget, tough :p

Emailed the local rag to see if they can find out, because you can bet it'll be a hassle to find the right person to speak to in the county council.

They replied already, that was quick, they want to make a story out of it and asked me to speak out (lol).

I said I just want to know why they're there!

I prefer the whiter lights, but it sounds like they are too bright.

They should replace them with lower wattage bulbs (be they incan, HID/HMI or LED), which should reduce glare (and power bills). They can also add diffusion with should also reduce glare as well.

those stupid directional filter/blinds type covers they put on traffic lights irritate the hell out of me! I want to know what colour the lights are BEFORE i get to them DON'T PUT THEM ON ROUNDABOUTS WHERE BY DEFINITION I'M NOT COMING STRAIGHT ON!!!!

and breath!

those new led cats eyes make my eyes go funny too.

I've not seen these yet but I'm sure they aren't quite right

I'm pretty sure they use sodium lights as they're by far the most efficient way of producing light so cost less for the same amount of lumens, and just by the nature of the light they're orange.

They are HPS (High Pressure Sodium) lamps - we have some in work that we are fitting cameras to :) The counils use them because they are way more efficient than the orange ones!

I thought some councils were supposed to be looking into blue street lighting? easier on the eye, less light polluting than Amber, and the eye can see blue better or something? I thought there was some inherent problem with our perception of yellow :p

Not so, I'm afraid. There's a totally different reason we have amber streetlights in the UK, unlike pretty much everywhere else in the world, and I for one have been wishing for years, nay decades, that they would catch up and use white ones.

IIRC there was some kind of binding purchase agreement for our govt to buy almost all of the orange sodium lights.
there's a good reason you almost never see them anywhere else in the world...mainly cos they're rubbish.

I hate them yellow street lights. I have one right outside my window and my rooms was lit up yellow at night until i got wooden blinds. The ones further up the street are white / pale yellow and look much better IMO.
