now explain it for the layman, as I think thats what op intended .
er.. you can't get more layman than that.. just what exactly are you expecting from a tutorial?

It really IS that simple. Ubuntu.com also has LOTS of documentation for installation, including CS:S install which is maintained by 100's if not 1,000's of Ubuntu users - so I really, *really* fail to see how one man, with only a handful of machines at best, will be able to write a tutorial that will out do the existing tried and tested document maintained by 1,000's of people with 1,000's of different setups.

i need to get this running properly .. my dvdr has died and I am waiting for a replacement and it the mean time my xp installation has got corrupted..

please I can get CS-S to start up just not properly so I must be nearly there right@?

have you tried running it in win98 mode?
Are you running Wine or cedega?
cedega would make things easier for you as you just set the game profile and go, well pretty much :)

its wine, I'n not going to pay to play I just would like to get running under linux as I really ony boot XP nowdays to play games.

Its cheaper than buying windows :)
Did you try putting wine into win98 mode?
You can ignore the hardware warning

Cedega has a free release via CVS might be worth giving that a shot

just a little update ppl have posted ways in this thread allready. but just to let you know i havent forgot about this thred but trying to find ouut the best way to get good frame rates using wine because whith my spec in sig e6300 is @ 3ghz i only get 70 fps on ububntu with all drivers and in xp i get 100 constant

also if you aree using gentoo youll have to get it with the patched kernel drivers if yo have a newer core2duo system because most mobos use the jmicron sata/pata chipset.

also it shuld be another 2 weeks till i get it sorted because i have been trying diff ways to get better fps .

CSS should run slightly faster on linux compared to XP shouldn't it?

I'm still using an athlon XP machine, and it struggles on 40 player servers under XP.

I would upgrade, but it's a lot of hassle when you are using a house rad in a WC loop. :)

To the OP... Sorry for dragging the thread off topic.

To the others: I did have a thread on here about it, but it's so old it must've been pruned as I did it in oct 2004. Here's a quick piccy:

This is when I was testing it, hence the messiness... The pump is off to the left.

I got 800gb of webspace today, so I'll post more details once it's all uploaded. I get good temps tho, it never goes above 37 degrees, even with a VCore of 2v.

Now, back on topic... I'm kinda stuck with this rig right now tho, so the more CSS performance, the better. :D Keep up the good work!
