Who buys everything original?

Lots of older Sigma lenses don't work on new bodies etc. And lenses like the Tamron 17-50 sometimes report focus errors etc. I really hate the fact that Nikon and Canon don't make their communications open, or just license it out for a fee.

the REALLY old ones yeah sure, but have heard of 1 case of communication issues recently to be honest.

What I have noticed with a lot of new Sigma/Tamron lenses is that they are increasing sharpness, especially in the center, but the contrast is still not often up to Nikon, and things like Bokeh quality and other subjective rendition quality are not as good.
This makes the lenses do well in objective tests but you can still see something special in Canon L glass and Nikon gold-ring.

again not always the case, example the sigma 50mm f1.4 in reviews of that class comes back certainly above the canon version.

I get terrible Lens hood clipping with my cheapo ebay hood, you have it perfectly setup for landscape turn the camera for portrait and the hood appears in the corners. The sigma zoom lens does not have this problem.

They are indeed my good man, as are most Tamron ones :)

That was the only reason I could think of! :) My only experience with centre pinch is on my Tamron, and I have to say it does make life easier - especially with a hood on :)

With regards to the OP, I take everything on a case by case basis. If a lens doesn't come with a hood (e.g. 55-250IS) then a third part will probably do the same job for a fraction of the cost. Same with triggers etc. Most other things I would probably go genuine for peace of mind, but definitely on a case by case, common sense basis :)

Usually buy original but just got a third party battery for an Acer laptop and it's tons better than the original ever was. The original failed after 9 months and unfortunately the battery was only covered under warranty for 6. New Acer was £80, 3rd party, £35. It's made me rethink my normal 'original' purchasing habit.

As if on cue Canon have confirm that the following Tamron lenses....

17-50 f/2.8 VC
60 f/2 Macro
70-200 f/2.8
10-24 f/3.5-4.5

Don't fully work with:

EOS 7D
EOS 60D
EOS 50D
EOS 40D

Outer AF points don't work correctly. Cause - Tamron using old lens IDs Canon had since retired.

Some of that glass is moderately expensive too and all of it is current to my knowledge. That's why I buy original kit.

interesting, i know quite a few xxD owners that recommend the tameron 70-200.. maybe becauase they havent had any issue or maybe no one uses the outer AF points. i know i dont 99% of the time..

either way ive got sigma lenses that are 4-5 years old, all work on my 1Dmk3 which isnt exactly old kit.

My cheepo eBay hood just arrived and does exactly the same thing. Unusable so its going in the bin. for £3.50 it aint worth sending it back etc. Think ive found a geniune one for £12

If I can afford it and there is a discernible reason to I'll buy original. With things like batteries, grips and remotes I've bought both original and 3rd party and see no reason to spend the extra. As far as lenses go I'd love to have all Canon but I can't afford L glass at the moment. In the budget area that I am in the value for money is with 3rd party lenses, especially when looking at faster glass.

the 3rd party ones i used in my 20D for the last 5 years (first lot lasting 4 years) are higher mAh so last longer ;)

not really fussed by this as the canon batteries are supposed to last for about 800 odd pictures and thats something that I'll never manage in one sitting without recharging so the canon ones are fine even if they cost the earth
