Guys I have an old PC which is 478 socket P4 but it needs a new pc case (and PSU), processor and as 478 is so old I may aswell go 775.

All I need is a simple single core Pentium 4 LGA775 Prescott as listed here for £55

With a nice mobo to accomodate it and a PC case with a PSU built in.

What I need the motherboard to do is preferably support C2D, but if it doesn't then it it doesn't matter to much just list if it does not support.

Also will this 775 support DDR PC3200 RAM or does it have to be of different specification such as DDR2?

Oh yeah and I am aiming for the cheapest possible set up! (Nothing but Intel chipsets please) :)
Cheers.

Get a asrock dual vsta wich ocuk doesn't sell, cheap solid mobo with ddr1, dddrII, agp and pci-e, perfect to keep ** old parts and gradually upgrade to newer ones, supports core 2 duo...

DDR 2 is a different slot ram but tehre are plenty of 775 mobo's with ddr1 still, *** standard is ddr2 though these days.

ASRock 775i65 - Intel 865G chipset, clocks very well. Supports all S775 CPU's including Core2Duos. If I may be blunt, I would not waste money on a £55 new Pentium 4. For £100 you can have an E4300 Core2Duo that will do 2.7Ghz in my suggested motherboard. Or for £22 you can have a Celeron 2.66GHz that will do 4GHz in the suggested board. If you desperately must have a P4, then get one second hand from MM - they're only about £30 now.

As for the case - without a budget it's very, very difficult but how about something like a Biostar C1. It won't clock, it won't handle Core2Duo's but they're retailing for about £70 now and for that you get a very smart SFF case, quality PSU and a VIA motherboard. All very stable and quiet.

If you absolutely insist on an Intel chipset then I don't think you can beat the ASUS Vintage PH-1 for £100 which gives you a decent ASUS 915 chipset motherboard in a well-made case with a good quality 350W PSU.

Alternatively Akasa Zen with a Tagan 300W Silent PSU would match up nicely with the previously suggested ASRock 775i65 motherboard concept. Still under £90 delivered!
