This is mainly aimed at those of you whose degree wasn't vocational/technical but any replies are welcome.

I'm only in my first year at university however I've been looking at internships for next year and it seems that 99% of them are for banks or consultancy firms. Obviously for people studying engineering and science, there's also a good amount of degree specific internships available.

For those of us who have zero interest in working in the financial sector, it seems pretty limited in terms of choice from what I have gathered, however I may be completely wrong. For those of you who did an internship, where did you do it and what were your experiences?

I did a 3 month summer internship with British Airways during my computer science degree. They're pretty common if you look around. Perhaps even approach companies directly.

Im studying science so may be a little different to your own discipline.

However I have worked as a research assistant in both the labs and in the field since I was in 1st year at Uni. Working alongside PhD students as well as staff. Have spent my summers working alongside staff on various projects in Iceland and had the chance to start my own project which has turned into my dissertation.

In addition I did a bunch of voluntary and paid work in the labs preparing samples, running experiments, analysing data for staff and post grads during term time since they are always monumentally busy.

The number of doors this has opened for me is incredible. I have a great set of references, some relevant experience and am probably going to come out with a better degree grade as a result.

You have to be pro-active though dont expect anything to be handed to you on a plate. It is very easy to sit unoticed and just be a number while at Uni and I know a number of people who said they would have loved to do some of the stuff I have done but are too lazy to actively persue the oportunities.

Just my 2p.

im currently in my second year of computer science and looking for one and yes most of them are for investmant banks/banks/consultancies as well as the obvious ibm/microsoft/google

Thats not true you can take a year in industry on loads of science degrees and go and work in a related field.

Well my experience of the life sciences has been that internships during term time are next to non existant.

Computing science and such probably have loads, but they have skills more directly applicable to industry i.e being able to use program x or y.

I'm having to do a msc after my degree purely for that reason :(
