I had a few clients who had problems with 1and1, admittedly with their hosting and not directly with domain name issues.

Following the debacle that was .eu registrations and their atrocious support, I'll never use 123reg for domains again.

So far so good with register1 and tsohost.

I've used 1and1.co.uk and ukreg.com with no problems whatsoever. They both allow transfers and have plenty of email adresses.
