Yes, I am very shallow and believe that if I "upgrade" my VGA card to another with 512MB, it simply wont be an upgrade. Stupid I know.

Roll on the 1GB Monsters :)

Nope, with the new way ATI are processing AA 4870 512MB seems to give decent performance even at 25x16 4xAA looking at the reviews.

I guess it depends what res you game at.

I was think upgrading my current Geforce 8800GTS 640mb to a Radeon 4870 512MB. Would I see a noticable different as I game at 1680 by 1050 or is it worth me waiting for the 1GB version?

ATI cards are very efficient with texture compression so 512mb is fine. I don't see 1gb making a larger difference.

Just what i have been thinking. Only game at 1680x1050 but would like a 24"+ at some point. I can't really find anything solid on the net to say there is going to be a 4870 1gb at all so maybe i should jump in and get a 4870 512mb

I also have the 8800gts 640 and have just ordered the 4870 512mb version. I game at 1900 x 1200, so at the resolution you game at, it should be a significant upgrade for you.

With the performance of the 512MB, I doubt the 1GB one will prove much faster even at high res.

Better off getting a 4870x2 than a 1GB 4870 I reckon.

Im interested to see what improvements it has over the 512Mb version but I don't really expect it to make that much difference, maybe if at 25 x 16 with loads of AA/AF ?

Also whether it's much more expensive too, though reckon the 4870X2 will be the better choice as it should undercut the GTX280 and also be faster in everything I would expect

R800 probably won't come 'till about this time next year - they're on a six month release cycle with high end cards that goes:

Architecture -> Shrink/refresh -> New architecture -> etc., etc.

RV770 is a new architecture (although it does processing the same way), as its core has been completely revamped and they dropped the ring bus.

As it happens lately it's been:

Q2 '07 R600 -> Q4 '07 RV670/R680 -> Q2 '08 RV770 ... -> Q4 '08 RV7xx? -> Q2 '09 RV870/R800?

Yeah I wouldnt have thought 5870 around Summer 09 time at the very least :)

Tis will be my next upgrade around then I reckon, that and an octocore should do nicely for a very long time.
