Who has a Computer Science Degree?

I did a Combined Studies degree at the University Of Abertay, Dundee. Consisted of a Maths and Computer Studies, missed out on Honours and did a Postgrad in Software Engineering.

I got sorted out before I left as I went through a Recruitment agency.
One thing to watch out for is if you sign up, if they send to an interview that involves travelling (ie train etc) make sure they stump up first as I got conned a couple of times with train tickets. Lost out on £120

As far as prospects, just apply for EVERYTHING. Once you are in a place it's easier to get another job.

Im doing ITO [Information Technology in Organisations] at Southampton University; the proper one.

Its sort of a variation on CS, in that they cut down on the actual nitty gritty and put in more business studies and managerial learning, which i thought would be much more suitable for a wide range of jobs rather than knowing specifics of programming etc. I found it hard to choose what to do at uni as i have always been fond of creative thinking, art and generally trying my best at everything. In the end i looked at my A lvls, A in art, A in business studies and a C in maths and thought.. i should be better at ITO..

Although, i have no idea what sort of job i will move into at the end of my time, or whether i will complete a masters degree.. although it will be a MEng, rather than MSc, for some strange reasons, although MEng degrees are highly respected so im seriously considering the extra year.

I think overall i may end up in some sort of consultancy position. Ive done consultancy type work for quite a while, although informal, but i enjoy telling other people how best to spend their money and see them benefit from it. To get paid for that would be great.

Hey im a CS at warwick as well, only first year. Not really enjoying it at all and deeply considering dropping out. I dont know whether its this specific course/uni but allot of people i know throughout all the years hate the course here.

I wouldnt even know where to begin not being in education though :( How do you go about getting a job without a degree?

I'm just coming to end of my 2nd year here at warwick uni comp sci and i love course here - although i had extensive knowledge regarding computers and programming languages before I came, it has definately taught me a few things - especially how team projects are managed and stuff like that!

Saying that, I'm moving over to management next year so all my comp sci lectures etc are finished!

I've applied to do computer science. First choice York, second Bristol (so anything could could tell me would be appreciated Psyk). Was wondering what people did with regards to placement years, were they useful to help you find employment afterwards? Or is it more useful to do a PhD if you wish to further your knowledge? As the lack of a placement year is what I am not liking about Bristol.
Yeah the lack of a placement year is one disadvantage to Bristol. Although it is perfectly possible to take a placement year, you just have to arrange it yourself and sort it out with the university that your taking a year out. I think a placement year would be very beneficial but I intend to get experience in other ways.

Personally I chose Bristol because the 4 year course (you get an MEng at the end rather than a BSc) has a big group project in the 3rd year where you make a game.

Almost finished the first year so I can tell you what that's like. In the first half of the year you learn C (although if you think you're already proficient in C you can do a project instead if you feel like a challenge) and you also do some maths (nothing too complicated). In the second half you do Java and Haskell and there's a module on computer architecture (processor design, assembly, etc). That makes up 2 thirds of your credit points, the rest you can chose whatever you want.

I've just started CS at Durham this year, enjoying it so far.

It's difficult to fully understand what "Computer Science" exactly covers before taking it as a degree. It's very different to A level Computing/Computer Studies/AVCE ICT. I'd recommend that you read this http://photoncubetutorials.blogspot.com/2006/03/what-is-computer-science.html

Alex

Alrite mate, I've applied to Durham todo CS this year. Its my firm choice. What college are you at?

I have a computer science degree from Birmingham.

Its been 5 years this year, I think a degree is a must as everyone has one, but I dont think you really learn important things until you get into the industry.

I am now a security consultant.

Best of luck and keep it up.

I'm a third year at East Anglia in Norwich. I'd heard about the I.T sector being pretty saturated with graduates and I was worried about getting a job, particularly as there are plenty of University's considered to be better out there. However, I was lucky to get a very good job based only a handful of applications.

Overall I really enjoyed it :)
