Can someone please answer the following questions as I hear a lot of good and bad about iPods.
Specifically, I need Shuffle answers as I might get one for the gf's birthday :)

1) Do they actually play MP3s or is it Apple's own format ?
2) Can you use MP3s that you've ripped off CD using a different program (eg.Audiograbber) ?
3) Do you have to put songs on it using its own program or does it appear as a hard drive and you drag and drop ?
4) Are they actually any good ?

Umm.... that's it I think... :)

Whoops :)

I've thought of another question too since people are falling over themselves to answer.
Can you choose the MP3s you want to put on it and then it plays them in a random order OR when you plug it in, does it decide what songs you can have ?

Download iTunes, copy mp3s to it, choose which to copy to iPod, play random or sequential, listen, enjoy.

1. they can play mp3 or AAC, i prefer AAC personally.
2. as long as its in mp3 format and imported into itunes (or similar ipod compatable software)
3. You might be able to drag and drop mp3's, you can access them via windows but i've never tried added via it. Itunes is always better.
4. i like my shuffle, its pretty simplistic though, i'm going to get a nano because i want the ability to add customised playlists, nice and small and light, easy to use, can't go wrong really.

Extra Question. You can tell itunes to fill it up with random songs, or you can specify the ones you want in the ipod playlist. Once they're on you can either put it in shuffle (random) mode, or ordered mode in however you've organised them via itunes, i normally listen to them alphabetically.

1) Do they actually play MP3s or is it Apple's own format ? Yes they play MP3's
2) Can you use MP3s that you've ripped off CD using a different program (eg.Audiograbber) ? I used WMA to burn the cd to the hdd, then Itunes to upload them to the Ipod
3) Do you have to put songs on it using its own program or does it appear as a hard drive and you drag and drop ? No drag and drop...thats Apple for you!! You've got to use Itunes
4) Are they actually any good ? Yep, i bought mine for the gym etc its so damn light that you cant tell its there, the sound output is fine, the loudness is fine.

I'm happy

There is plenty of ways around it if you don't wanna use iTunes. There's a thing which you can use to convert it to a proper flash drive type MP3 player so it's just a drag and drop memory stick affair.

I bought a Shuffle yesterday when i found out how cheap they were from Mr Apple.

It worked out cheaper than any other "unbranded" 1gb Mp3 player. So i thought "Why not!", music pr0's like me don't need a screen! ;)

Should be at home by thursday! :D

You can use other apps like MediaMonkey but the iPod Shuffle doesn't support (UMS + filetree). Most people seem to think it sounds quite nice. Do a search for it on the audiophile forums and you'll find it reckoned to have top notch sound quality. I bought mine because it was cheaper than a flash drive. But really like it for music now, even though I've another MP3 player.
