Yo

Who here is a teacher? If so what age group and if applicable what subject?

My wife to be is a primary teacher, specialist in early years and autism.
The job is hard and takes most of the evening and weekends away from her but she feels its worth it as the kids always have a smile on their face when they see her

I feel that the career is belittled by many in this day and age, not many actually understand what goes into teaching and many think teachers arrive and leave when the kids do.
This is not the case and there is so much paperwork involved its silly... not to mention when the authorities are doing the rounds with school gradeings.. then its insane.

I for one am fed up of joe public belittling teachers.

I'm not, but my OH is, she teaches secondary school kids 11-18. The amount of work she does in the evening is ridiculous, she says she loves the satisfaction she gets when she sees kids improve but to me she is completely knackered all the time. It is a job I wouldn't recommend anyone to get into.

Honestly, I take my hat off to teachers, especially the ones that put up with secondary school kids.

Not all secondary school kids cause trouble... but a fair few of them do. Don't think I could do it, but a lot of the teachers who taught me or knew me seem to enjoy. Been back in a few times to visit some of them and they seem rather happy to be honest!

Some teachers are worse than the kids though, in that they single some students out and pick on them/make them look like fools. Had this one teacher who picked on everyone and nobody could get the better of him (proper smart ass), used to get on with him fairly well. Seems he has a vendetta against my sister though... Some teachers can be just plain stupid or arrogant though.

I think those types of teachers are turned evil by all the evil teenagers over a long period of time haha

No but the ones who cause trouble really do make it their goal in life to cause trouble, I'd loose my temper :D

Teachers are professionals, they have no such thing going on, don't be so pathetic.

I disagree, a family friend is going through this currently with their child. I've seen it with my own eyes, when a child is flagged as 'bad' then they immediately get shot down for everything! I'm not saying all teachers do it, however teachers most definitely have their favourites and the ones they follow the rules to the dot with.

I believe that good teaching is phenomenally difficult. The few that manage it (fortunately a couple teach my 13 year old) are incredible. They engage with the pupils, catalyse the need to learn, and inspire.

However, I do think that this level is the exception, and as a result the profession is undervalued because the performance of the majority of teachers falls below what our next generations need.

Some teachers are exceptional and work long hours and are to be commended, other teachers work the bare minimums and are not...however the bad teachers are invariably protected and while it might be a difficult job, it also has its compensations.

I have several friends who are teachers (secondary/grammar) and they work about the same total hours as I do, with similar holidays (which are significantly more than statutory) and in all but one case they earn more than I do, one is a head teacher and earns significantly more than I do. They get an excellent pension, good sickness benefits, good salaries and all in all, teaching can be a rewarding and successful career for someone...but like all things it is generally up to the individual how they manage their time and workloads, some are better than others.

It isn't the easiest job in the world, but it isn't the hardest either.

I really do get tired of this argument.

Yes teachers work hard, but so do many people and many of them put up with worse, teachers get an incredibly amount of holiday and are reasonably well paid for their work, on top of other benefits such as relative job security and a decent pension. Much of the reason for people "belittling" teachers (which I would hardly call it) comes from a very vocal portion of them and their apparent victim complex.

Teaching is an admirable profession and some (not all) teachers are brilliant people, willing to do the extra work to try and make an actual difference. My godmother is a primary school teacher, she works very hard and thoroughly enjoys her work, however even she agrees that the rewards are more than adequate.

I am a teacher. I teach Design Technology to 14 to 18 year olds.

Behaviour is very subjective, as one of the younger teachers at school I will see things very differently to some of my older colleagues.

One of the issues I think is often ignored is the 'X factor' type pressure that parents put on their kids, making them think they are a genius, when they are completely average. Meaning they get disappointed with anything lower that an A and in turn start to become daft!

They get the same holiday as everyone else if they use the time correctly....

Yeah it doesn't seem easy. Other than Teaching IT.

My primary and Secondary school IT teacher did nothing other than get us to create some graphs on excel, and now and again when we was being really adventurous created a query on Microsoft Access.

No one did the work.

My girlfriend is a primary year 4 teacher. She gets to school at 7:30 and doesn't leave until 5 - 5:30 ish then does a few hours of work in the evening.

My misses is a teacher (also year 4 Primary). She is the hardest working individual I know.

I won't even bother wasting my time posting about how much work teachers do. People who have no exposure to the industry simply do not understand.

What even is the point of this thread? Your fiancee is a teacher and you think its hard? Woop de do basil its a career choice that she has made just like nurses, this whole my career is hard is getting old, if its so hard change it, or get on with life.

OP why do you care what Joe public think? unless someone has said something specifically about you partner?

I know many people who call out bad teachers (and there are many of them), but I know many who commend the good ones, like with pretty much any career / business, it's not just unique to the teaching profession.
