There is only two of us doing it at the moment so its one week on one week off, usually the calls wake me up at 7, however I have just had a message to get up at 6:45 to make some cable changes.

Id say on a quiet week id get couple of texts, but when it gets busy it does :(

Does anyone else do it?

Not this week, no.

However, our company is now working towards making on-call ONLY being available for 100% critical situations. No more users calling at all hours because their OWA isn't logging in when they just "feel like" checking it.

I was on various oncall rotas from 1998-2008 from various enterprise Unix customers.

How often I was rota'ed varied between 1 week in 4 for a long time, 1 week in 2 for a couple of years and then the last couple of years I was oncall all of the time. Most calls were between 10pm and 2am ... although there would be another cluster around 5am.

Most of the time it wasn't to bad as it was only for high severity incidents affecting the majority of the users of a system (e.g. system down) but there were weeks where I didn't get much sleep. Fortunately the accounts I covered were some of the better managed ones so we didn't have too many issues.

Wouldn't do it now though as there was a constant "will I be called" amount of stress ... do miss the extra £256/week (for just carrying the pager - overtime on top of that if I was actually called) which I tihnk has actually gone up since I last did it.

Yeah on call overtime kicks ass, last job I was in paid double time even for part hours worked, so if you took a phone call which lasted 5 minutes you could claim for the whole hour :)

Been on the phone since 6:50 this morning and im still on a call, seven sites down after major routing changes last night, grrr

Yup - one week out of three.

Some weeks I can get only a couple of call,s other I can be paged out every night.morning.

Hotspot times are when batch is running - 9pm to 11:30 pm and when the services start - 5:45am. Nothing really happens between those times so it's never that bad when I get paged/called.

No service on a Sunday so rarely get called out - still get paid for it though :-)

I'm on call constantly (unless on pre booked holidays) though in all honesty it only happens once or twice a year. They got round the problem of people not answering the phone by sending a letter via taxi to your door :)

I'm doing one week on one week off which gives me an extra 450 a month before tax. Some weeks are dead. Others are a nightmare. Like this morning. It's usually the mornings that are busy. Pm is rarely an issue

EDIT Just had another one

I'm on-call usually 1 or 2 weeks a month, depends how I rota the team. Fortunately we don't get many calls in the early hours.
