Who is reputed to be the best programmer?

When I lived in Amsterdam I knew a programmer. He won a computer programming contest run by Phillips when he was 8 years old. He done his program on a ZX81. He kept up with PC's all his life and seemed to know everything from building PC's to programming them to networking them etc. It seemed to me there was nothing you could teach him. I remember asking him what languages he programs in and he looked at me like I was a bit stupid and said "all of them" lol.

I remember when he found out I was from Liverpool he got a bit excited and asked me if I knew some guy (I forget the guys name he asked me). I told him I did not know this guy and asked him why he wanted to know if I knew him. He told me he is considered one of if not the best programmer in the world.

Who in your opinion relating to programming do you think wow that guy or woman really knows their stuff?

People like Carmack and Tim Sweeney, they are the people that produce the original algorithms, others either copy or lease their engines.
