Steve Mclaren announces his first England squad at weekend and it rumoured that the front runners for the captaincy are Steven Gerrard or John Terry with Frank Lampard an outsider.

Firstly I think its very fine margins between the pair. Both excellent footballers technically, captain of their club side and on the face of it the will to win (2 Premier Leagues and 1 European cup between them recently). Both could have had better world cups but I put the blame firmly at the door of Sven for that. Sometimes they can be a little exuberant in the tackle, which comes across as being rash. Both are fantastic ambassadors for their country and club

Personally I would go for Stevie G out of the two/three names mentioned. As I say very fine margins in it for both. However John Terry is a very good player in an exceptionally strong Chelsea side. Stevie G appears to excel in a Liverpool side that arguably weaker. The thing I like about Gerrard is he come across as professional, no nonsense and doesn't dodge a question type. So he will fulfil his obligations both on and off the field as England captain.

As a UTD fan I have no bias to either. Who would you like to see as the next England captain and why

Dons maybe worthy of poll ?

Terry for me because he's a defender and see's more of the game.

If anyone can be bothered, it'd be interesting to see a list of winning captains from the World Cup and Euro Championships over the last 50 years or so. I'd take a guess at the majority of these being defenders or goalkeepers. :)

I was bored and also intruiged to know so I have done some research. :D

World Cup
1966 Bobby Moore - Defender
1970 Pele - Forward
1974 Franz Beckenbauer - Defender
1978 Daniel Passarella - Defender
1982 Dino Zoff - Goalkeeper
1986 Diego Maradonna - Forward
1990 Lothar Matthaus - Midfielder/Sweeper ?
1994 Dunga - Midfielder
1998 Didier Deschamps - Midfielder
2002 Cafu - Defender
2006 - Fabio Canavarro - Defender

UEFA Champions
1964 Francisco(Sp) - Midfielder
1968 Jacinto Facchetti - Defender
1972 Franz Beckenbauer - Defender
1976 ????
1980 Karl Heinze Rummenigge - Forward
1984 Michell Plattini - Midfielder
1988 Ruud Gullitt - Midfielder
1992 Peter Schemichel - Goalkeeper
1996 Jurgen Klinsmann - Forward
2000 Didier Deschamps - Midfielder
2004 Theo Zagorakis - Midfielder

22 Major championships

7 defenders
9 Midfielders
3 Forwards
2 Goalkeeprs
1 to be confirmed from Euro 1976

If you include the Goalies with the Defenders its a pretty good split between them & Midfield
