I got a computer to diagnose the other day. I originally suspected the PSU. I went through the diagnosis process and eliminated everything. GPU, RAM etc. It wouldn't post. So it was bound to be the PSU!!

It arrives. Install it and nothing happens. So I then think... hmmm, must be the mobo. I tried a new CPU also just in case. New mobo installed. Nothing!

Tries old PSU again, nothing!

So after swapping every single component. I still had the amber light on the mobo. No post beeps as there is no speaker.

I started to question myself. Am I going nuts!! I've swapped everything. Bearing in mind it's custom coolers also so it's not exactly seconds to swap out the components.

I seen the keyboard light up at the end and thought, hmmm??

Turns out in the end the monitor cable had fell out the back. I was absolutely raging. Hours of headaches and diagnosis out the window!!

So now I need to go back to the beginning and re diagnose all the parts to find out exactly what the problem really is as I have no idea now.

So the top tip is. If your PC doesn't POST. Don't assume it's the PC... check the monitor as well!

Disaster!

Fail of the year. :p

That's why DVI and VGA cables have screw in connectors.

HDMI and DisplayPort are a tighter fit and would be unlikely to fall out of their own accord.

WOW ! :D

Talking of static I recently realised that the grounding strap I have been using for over a year is broken. Another top tip - don't waste your time if you don't know the simplest parts are in order!

I was waiting on someone clocking that!

Yes I'm fully aware they should have been screwed in. However, it's extremely difficult to get your fingers on them and flat heads tend to snap the plastic coating. I always just push them in and it's fine.

I am kicking myself however I never took the 5 minutes to fiddle with it and get it screwed in. I will be now of course.

Happy to oblige ;)

I must admit I do the same myself when connecting a PC temporarily to a monitor.

Tough luck buddy :D you're not the only one who's done this. I thought my whole machine was fried the other night, then at 4am I realised it POSTed if I had the keyboard unplugged... Bearing in mind I started the diagnosis at 2pm... I should have checked!

Christ! That's just as bad as this one.

The best one I've ever done was around 3 years ago when I was reinstalling windows on a womans laptop. It came to the last driver. Webcam!

I spent hours searching the web for this driver. It was no where to be seen. I then found one!! It wouldn't install however. I tried a few reinstalls. Compatibility mode the lot!

I then looked at the top of the laptop lid after around 4 hours diagnosing.

IT NEVER HAD A WEBCAM!!!
