Guys i cant play online games. We have a crappy 2mb Virgin connection Wireless at uni. Im using a BT wireless receiver USB stick in the back of my tower. The internet connection here is intermittent to say the least which is something i cant understand but still. When the internet is running properly, i get the correct 2mb speeds according to all tests i can do - even downloading from Gameshadow and MS.

However, i simply cant play any online games at all - my ping is utterly massive. In WoW it ranges from 150 to about 12000!!!!

So, anyone got any 'home fixes' that they know of that may help me?

cheers

ha! not the answer i was looking for!! - its so blumin annoying - all virgin adverts rant on about how great their service is so that you can play online games etc - i kicked up a fuss when the lads in my flat told me we had gone to virgin because if they had just stopped to ask, i could have told them it would be total gash!

Im assuming that its Vigin ADSL and not cable. How is everyone elses internet? Can you do directly wired and try it like that?

150 ping in wow is normal. if the connection is shared and anyone running any torrents or anything thats using a lot of bandwidth it will cain your ping.

also make sure your connection is secure so no one is stealing your bandwidth

Im with virgin Adsl service 8meg.
i get awsome speeds rangeing from 800-880kb down

But i cant game at all, massive pings in every game i try.

i phoned there tech support at least 4 times in the last month complaining about it

here are some of the things i got told off them

:We dont support Gameing!
:No sir we cant change you from Interleaved to Fastpath
:No sir our services dont support Low pings.

------------------------------

i have downloaded about 200gig in the past 2 months connection speeds are great
but i advise anyone that games never ever use |Virgin Media as your internet service provider.

even when you phone them there operators are illiterate.

ummm did i make the right choice?

im with virgin media but the cable service, i get about 1.75Mb down and 192kbs up so not to bad realy with the 2mb service i took out.

i get low pings eg 30 max in crysis.

armed assault tho well i get low pings but the bandwidth realy is bugging me as its higher than most like 1000 or so others reads 200,500 or less.

any one play the game when it says bandwidth is that used or free bandwidth.

Yeah, I just joined Virgin this month, and I gotta tell you, gaming is horrible. I also have ADSL 8MB plan, but my line only supports 5.5mbit. Download speeds are awesome, especially virgin's own usenet servers. The only game I play online is ET:QW, and pings are about 200, which is WAY worse than my old 1mbit connection. I just do a tracert to www.bbc.co.uk and it's the 2nd hop that kills me. I have to turn off my connection via the router and then reconnect. Sometimes it take serveral tries before I'm able to get a decent ping. I must say i'm quite dissapointed.

I have had Virgin installed for over 4 years now, and the service used to be grrreat. I remember playing UT2004 when it came out, on just a 512kbit connection, and things were awesome on 50-100 ms ping connections. I was so addicted that my right hand ended up locked in a claw position - when I decided to back off a bit.

Now, I bought UT3 and I never see a ping below 200 ms - every is beating me on there!, and thats on an allegedy 8mb connection which frequently disconnects and most of the time is no faster than dial up. Virgin used to be the dogs danglies... now its more like the dogs dinner.

Roll on Friday, when my line changes to Be!

Can you paste the contents of a traceroute in here? Seems more likely to be a problem with your wireless than your ISP with pings like that, but if not I would class that as a line fault.

It's a problem effecting zen/virgin users at the minute.. The routing to some wow servers though some telia.net routers in paris is screwed.. And basically Blizzard arn't doing enough to resolve the issue. There is a big thread on the wow tech forums.
