Who's escaped from IT and how did you find starting again?

I'm always seeing threads about how people are bored of working in IT and how others hate it and want to do something else but never do anything about it - so I'm interested in hearing from people who simply had enough of the politics in IT and decided to start a new career!

How did you fund your new career and how long did it take to get comfortable again? I've been looking to get out of IT for a while now but have a year left of loan payments then I'll be debt free. Don't think its worth the risk at the moment of trying something new incase it doesnt work out and I'm stuck jobless!

I'm looking to go back to uni when I'm loan free or doing a HND as I know the career path I want to go but as I'm getting older (nearing 30) I dont know how easy it is to start all over again... Wish I'd chosen a different career path back when I was 18 and at uni the first time but alas you live and learn Just wondering how others found it completely changing career paths?

Well thanks for the input but I already stated in the OP that this was brought up often. I wanted to hear from people who had actually made the jump and how they found it. I dont mind taking a paycut to move into a career I now find interesting but to start with it will be a huge cut so was wondering how others coped until they had the experience they needed to do well in their new career and if it panned out how they had hoped (being that the grass always seems greener!).

It just seems that in IT to do really well you have to love everything computers and as I get older I'd prefer to not spend so much time round them and just enjoy other things. When I was 18 I loved everything computers so was good at the job but nowadays I find myself more into the arts/marteting side of things which I would never have dreamed of when I was 18! I was science man/IT man and that was it!
