Who's running a 12/16 core on MSI X470?

I've decided it's time to retire my X370 Taichi as i want to see if i can get my RAM to run faster ( it will do 3600 on that board but sometimes gets stuck in a cold boot loop so i just run it @3200 ) This board has beastly VRMs which have been great for my 3900X.

I have an MSI X470 Gaming Plus Max in another system that I could use but I'm worried how the 3900X will perform on that. it has the same VRM set up as the B450 Tomahawk but with a much worse heatsink. I've done quite a bit of googling/youtube but most of the information on this board is around the 2700X CPU.

I just wondered if anyone here has experience of using a 12/16 core CPU on one of these boards (or similar) I have no doubt it will work but if I'm going to lose a noticeable amount of performance I'd rather just sell on both boards and buy a B550 or X570
Thanks
Scott

There's a vrm spreadsheet saying my board if fine for a standard 3900/3950x and overclocked 3900x with moderate vrm airflow but 3950X OC is best avoided. I might try it just for an experiment but I think I'm going to order another tomahawk x570 as It'll give me a bit of peace of mind and save me dismantling my system yet again if I upgrade to a 16 core at some point.

tbh regardless of what the CPU is, you can test the X470 VRM with the 3700x in it already.

just do manual OC and dial up the Vcore & Vsoc till you hit a CPU wattage package that roughly match the 3900x. and see what that does to the VRM.

my 3900x draws around 150w when stress testing. thats CCX OC with 1,26Vcore 1.1Vsoc 4375, 4400, 4250, 4250

I've given it a go 3700x 68c @144W
3900X 85c @175W

That's prime small FFTs probably the worst case scenario. It's not terrible at all really but I've already ordered the tomahawk

Looks alright to me. 85c is toasty but not gonna thermal throttle.

I very much doubt you will see much different with Tomahawk. My x570 unify has pretty beefy VRM and heat piped heat sinks. At full load VRM are around 60c. So not much differences to your test.

I've gained around 100 points in cinebench which works out to about £2 a point

Vrm temperature difference is amazing though 177W and the vrm temperature is 44c after around 2 hours. Still not worth the hassle but it's not like I've got anything better to do :)

3900x using a msi gaming m7 AC

worst comes to worst strap a small fan on the VRM with extra heat sinks. I just swapped out a b350 tomahawk that I modded the VRM with extra heatsinks. knocked 10c off the temp without any extra air flow (R5 2600)
