I am kinda interested in the AMD 8000 series. I get it the 7xxx series was a bad seller but besides the ray tracing performance I didn't think it was all bad or am I missing something here? Sure maybe it was priced typically above what we are use to and goes against the bang per buck philosophy.

Not me.
I made a decision last year to only upgrade every second or third generation. I bought a 4000 series last year so no upgrades for a while, yet.

I am also wondering where graphics cards will go in future, because they seem to be reaching a limit. I mean, surely, they can't consume much more power, can they? As it stands, I see my electricity bill jump when I play an mmo!!!!

I am in the market for a new CPU this year but I would think maybe 6000 series is when I get a new GPU.

Will get a 5090, as long as performance is 30% greater than a 4090. Will probably look to upgrade around March if it’s decent.

Looking to build a new AM5 PC in the next couple of months so I’d like a FE to go with that.

However, I’ll be pretty disappointed if it’s only a 30% performance increase over a 4090. I’ll need another GPU either way but it’ll be a hard sell to me if that is the case.

Nope. Not even slightly tempted. My 4090 founders edition is still going very strongly thank you very much and I rarely do any desktop gaming these days. I play my games mainly handhelds like Steam deck Oled, RG cube, Odin 2 pro, and Retroid pocket 5. And I suspect these new gpus will be priced horrendously of course.

What's the 4090 going very strongly in then if you rarely do any desktop gaming  you mean as a paperweight?

I'm getting one. I went for the 4080 Super at launch, upgrading from a 2060. Also go a Oyddesyey Neo G9 so with i'd actually gone for the 4090. So this time around i'll just get the best and be done with it.

I did some back-of-the-envelope analysis and found that, for the games that actual benefit from a 4090 e.g. Alan Wake 2, CP77, I only played 32 hours last year. That's very little playtime for the extra ~£1000 above a 7900x or 4070ti which performs perfectly well and indiscernably different even at 4k for most games. I ended up selling my 4090 last month for more than I paid for it, and bought a used 6950xt which is more than enough for me.

Top-end 5000-series cards are going to be phychopathically expensive. The only cards I'm interested in at this point are higher mid-range e.g. 5070 ti and 8800xt where a) there's still a sliver of price/performance value, b) is right where I need them in performance.

I’m still on a 3080 as I upgrade every second generation. However I accidentally broke an ultrawide screen last week which I replaced with a high refresh 4K OLED and need the 5090’s raw power to do it justice.

I’m expecting to pay £1,800-2,300 for the privilege but don’t think I’d pay much over £2,300 if the prices are really bad.

Tempted, but trying to be objective my rtx3080 still does everything I want it to really and I just don't think I could justify dropping £1k+ on an upgrade.

e: I do now have a 4k monitor (use it for work and hobby video editing and watching stuff which were the drivers for upgrading from 1440p) which means I could make use of more power, but tbh I find with older games the rtx3080 is absolutely fine at 4k, and for newer ones with DLSS and / or turning settings down a bit I'm happy enough with the results. And I don't have as much time for gaming as I'd like anyway!
