Hello all,

I have setup whs2011 on a hp n40l serving files and media around the house. I set the server to auto login on startup (I know most don't recommend this but I have my reasons)

I used the Remote desktop connection to log into the whs desktop. that worked great but when I logged in remotely the server would revert to the login screen whilst I tinkered about.

when I log out of the remote desktop the server remains on its login screen. I have to restart the server through the RDC or physically connect a keyboard and enter the password to get back to the whs desktop.

Is there a way to stop this behaviour by whs as its particularly annoying.

I have it logged in because I have the server connected to my TV via HDMI - I use plex to watch and listen to all of my music and films (which are stored on the server). I have not figured out how or if I can run this program properly without having the server logged in.

As im new to server OS's I am probably going about things very wrong?

If you have better advice on how to set my server up then I would like to know. this is all a big learning curve atm

You need to set Plex Media Server up to run as a service which starts on windows logon. Have the same setup as you minus Plex and everything is set up as a service. Then if I need to do anything I can use Remote Desktop.

Yeah I get that, however because I also have Plex media center on the same machine as the front end I need to be logged in to use the GUI and the plex remote app(unless im mistaken) because this server is directly linked to my TV (without a separate HTPC box) I don't see any other way of doing it?

unless I can change this then I have to try an solve my original question.

Ahh right I get you. When you finish the remote session it's on a login screen which isn't very media friendly. Sadly I have no idea on that one. You could try finding a way to remote login that allows the client machine to stay logged in. Maybe a different remote app?

I may try another remote desktop client to see if that has the desired affect of not login the server out.
