Ok, I have a strange problem- trnsferring files to and from client pc's to the server is done at an ok speed considering I'm using powerline adapters. However, for some reason, transferring a file between shared folders on the SAME hd on the server itself is really slow

I'm getting around 800kb/sec when I thought it should be super quick as the network isn't being used its just moving a file to another folder on the same hd??!

Its driving me mad and I hope a learned ocuk member can put my mind at rest and explain whats wrong!

:D

Copying on the same drive is usually quite slow, moving (cutting/pasting) is usually almost instant as the data on the drive isn't really moved but copying requires lots of read/writes.

I've got an earlier version of WHS (think it's 2003?). If I copy a file from one directory on the server to another, it seems to come via the pc I'm using, rather than the server. I thought it was slow and it confirmed it by using Task manager. Never understood why! I wouldn't do it again on wireless unless it's a few small files!

Each shared folder on the server is treated as a separate drive - even if they're on the same physical disk.

Therefore, it will always "transfer" between the two. Especially if you're doing it browsing from your client PC, it will transfer the files to your machine, then back to the server.

I tend to RDP to the server to move large files around, and then it's much quicker to move stuff, even though it doesn't "move" instantly, it's still quicker than via the network (even at gigabit speeds)
