Hi there, I currently own a Thecus N5200 NAS 5 bay NAS device, bought it fairly cheap for £250 a couple of years ago but it's got a little long in the tooth, writes of 25-30mb\s and reads of 35-40mb\s. Ideally would just like a new 7 or 8 bay NAS like the Thecus N8800 but they cost a fortune so have decided to go down the DIY NAS route and run WHS on it.
I've decided on the case, Lian Li PC-354 which can hold 7 3.5 inch hard drives and has a 5.25 inch bay that I could also use as another 3.5 inch bay. Seems like it shouldn't cost too much to get it all going relatively speaking and I'm fully capable of putting anything together.
There doesn't seem to be much info for people who want to put a diy nas together with more than 4 drives though from looking around. I'm really unsure as to what motherboard\cpu\psu\sata card combo that are similarly specced and will be capable of providing decent throughput oon a 7\8 drive RAID5\6 array for this kind of setup running WHS.
Specifically, the PSU I have literally no idea what sort of power rating I'll need, obviously power is a concern also from a running cost point of view even my current NAS which can't draw much power certainly adds to the electric bill noticeably.
It's basically going to be used for backup from a couple of computers I've got in the house, file storage so just a windows share for those 2 things. Also streaming to XBMC on a couple of nettop setups I have setup in living room and bedroom.
Would also be good if the cpu was powerful enough to use as a DVR though XBMC, as might make use of that in the future if I get rid of Sky and use freesat\freeview HD.
Cheers!![Smile :) :)](/styles/default/xenforo/vbSmilies/Normal/smile.gif)
