not knowing anything about either OS, which would be a better option to use for a home server?

Is WHS compatible with Windows 7?

Looking to create a home server primarily for backups and secondary for storing shared media.

Any other options available to use?

agreed. Neither is suitable to be honest.

Server operating systems are there for serving where as Windows 7 is designed to be a client or in more simple terms... retrieve items.

I would also suggest windows home server (WHS) which is much better suited for your needs. Is it also compatible with Windows 7

WHS PowerPark 3 will make WHS 100% compatible with Win7.. This is in beta atm, you can download but it should be released before xmas but its not like WHS won't work with Win7 without it..
