This is to replace old e2200 socket 775 setup that i've a) run out of sata ports on, and b) doesn't like anything above a 2tb disk.
re-using current 1.5tb drives, (1 new 3tb) 500w psu and case. will be installing Win8 via usb so no need for optical drive.

The machine is currently just used to store photo's, ripped dvds (which stream to clients) and important docs, it also backs my main pc, laptops etc...
My current plan is to use this going forward with Win8 storage pools to replace the WHS buggy drive extender.

How many HDD's do you need? If it's not over 4-5 then I'd suggest HP microserver, see the massive thread in the server section, can be had for £130~ after rebate.

problem with HP microserver is: Maximum internal storage: TB (4 x 2 TB 3.5” SATA drives)

And i already have a 3tb, 2tb, 1.5tb, 1.5tb and a 500gb... intending to replace the 500gb with another 3tb at some point.

The HP Microserver can use 3TB+ drives and you can fit a 5th drive with an adaptor and even a 6th drive like i have with a bit of fiddling. The only limitation would be that you can not use anything over 2TB as a boot drive.
