Hi,

I'm looking at building a file server. I currently host all the family photo's, music and my theme park video's from my main PC. the other PC's through the house (including the TV, AMP, PS3 and 360) all access the files via powerline plugs. Laying cable is not an option and the powerline plugs certainly beat the wireless I replaced and speeds are excellent throughout for streaming vids and transferring files.

My concern is that I plan to sit the server next to my main PC. Not next to the router as this is behind my TV Cabinet in another room. So I'd need to buy a second router that will take the powerline plug into both my PC and the new server. The reason the main router is behind the TV is because that's where my broad band comes in and I have a few consoles, amp and TV connected all to the router. The router then goes to powerline to link up to the rest of the house. 3 endpoints up stairs and my main PC in another room.

Can you see any problems running the server this way. And does this make sense?

If I'm reading this correctly you want to connect two machines to the powerline adapter that currently connects to your main pc?

If so then you just need to get a cheap network switch and connect both machines and the powerline adapter to it. You don't need/want an additional router.

Yes it's a switch you need. OcUK do a 5 port 100Mbps switch that would work for about £5.

If you want a faster connection between your main PC and the WHS you could get a Gigabit switch instead. This assumes that both machines have Gigabit network cards installed.

The speed of the switch will make no difference to anything at the other end of the powerline connection.

Yeah just a bog standard switch. Switch is to expand you network, router is to create a link between two networks together.

what powerline gear are you using? some of them do one with a built-in switch. it would work out a bit more expensive but it's a 'neater' solution since no extra power sockets etc are used up.

I'm using the Devolo 200mbps throughout the house. I like the idea of the faster connection between the server and my main PC (next to each other), as I'm the main user of all of the files I'll be sharing.

One of the reasons I actually want a server is that my power hungry gaming PC needs to be on all the time.

Now to look for some server hardware. Quiet tower with lots of hard drives potential.
