Just set up a Windows Home Server system and have done my first backup, which all went well. I've allowed media sharing from within the setting but all folders are all empty.

I was hoping they would auto populate from the backup. The only information I could find on the Microsoft website is to copy paste the files that I want to share but this would just mean having three copies of the same file and I would have to manually update them.

So I was just wondering if it is possible for the shared folders to be automatically updated with each back up?

The whole idea is to put all your files on the home server and not on the local computer. This is how I run it, all documents and files are on the WHS, none are stored locally.

I can do that but that still means copying and pasting the files that I already have on the server in the form of back ups.

Also, where do you back up your files?

All my files on the server are resilient as they are all duplicated. The server runs Virgin Media backup and backs up to their servers at 2am. Discovered I have 10Gb of allowed storage, so back up all my company stuff and personal files and photos. My music and videos can all be stored again, so they are just left to the will of the gods!

I do not think there is anyway of taking the files from the backups and into the shared folders. I could be wrong of course.

That is going to be a real pain. Most my work files are saved to my laptop as I work on site and a lot of the time there is no wifi, so I have no choice but to save them locally.

What I really want to be able to do is get home from work, hit backup and then the files that I have been working on during the day are synced to the shared folder on the server.

You will need to use an application such as RoboCopy to configure the update from your laptop to the shared folder on the server.

That looks like what I am after, thank you. Am I right in thinking that robocopy is already integrated in Windows 7, I just need to download some sort of UI to be able to use it?
