At the moment my server runs headless and films, programs etc are streamed from it to my main rig and shown on the TV. But I fancy changing it so that it's just a HTPC plugged straight into my AV where I can use XBMC (or similar) with a media remote as soon as it comes out of sleep.
The hardware is as follows;
Motherboard - Asus AM3 760G
Processor - Sempron 145
Memory - 2GB DDR3
I don't think it's going to be able to stream HD with what I've got. So my options are, bump up the CPU to a dual core Athlon or, keep the current CPU and add a graphics card, something like the ATi 5450.
The next thing is the OS, again I think 2GB memory and single core processor are going to be painfully slow for Win7. So I could go with Ubuntu 32bit but I've heard problems with getting sound across HDMI and I may upgrade to Blu Ray if I ditch my PS3 and I hear Blu Ray can be a headache with Ubuntu?
