why all the hate for hs2?

It should be compulsory purchase at 3 x Market value and if it was bought that property within the past 18 months you get back what you paid for it. To stop insider backhanders or it goes to appeal and your background and relationship to anyone in the decision making process (including friends/family) is reviewed.

It would be halfway to being built now if it wasn't for the above. I am sure their is savings to be had in the construction as well with backhanders to private firms who are 50x price on materials as its government spending.
This is 100% going on as my family are direct witnesses to it.

Imagine 100 billion being spent on road network instead.

It is just a staggering amount really. The Lincoln bypass for example is going to cost 350 million when all done and will be great when finished.

You can have another 300 projects like that all over the UK instead of 1 rail line from London to Birmingham.

It all just a massive con for private construction firms to milk the tax payer and then continue to milk it when it is complete.

It is even more diabolical that something this large of a cost to the tax payer that is meant to be a democracy never had a say on it either.

It's a very typical government ill-conceived mess. They didn't diagnose the problem correctly in the first place so they aren't fixing anything. They are just wasting money.

It's also very typical that their concept of levelling up is to allow more people to come to London. Someone should explain to them that's not really levelling up.

Imagine the good that could have been done with £30 billion each for Manchester, Birmingham and Liverpool to be spent on local infrastructure.

And what makes you think it should only be the north that gets any money? Plenty of places south and west of London are in desperate need of money as well, also with terrible rail and road networks.

Fact is we have been upsetting the countryside since we chopped down all the forests to build ******* warships.
fact is those places have nautralised and turned into other ecosystems for a long time now, including woods, and what is left of the ancient woodlands themselves

do you know where birmingham is?, I guess it is northwest of london technically, but it's not really considered to be in 'the north'
that would be like saying Norwich is in the north because it is north east of london, but I can assure you that Norwich is not in the north, except it's position in east anglia ofc

Pretty much the whole project has been a mess with billions of taxpayers money wasted. I've got a friend who regularly visits the sites and some of the 'work' being done is just an obvious gravy train for some contractors and companies.

I wouldn't be surprised if there is an inquiry at some point.

There might be one.
It'll be long into the future.
It'll dish out some blame.
Nothing will be done.
No one will care as it was so long ago/"it's just politics"

Rinse and repeat

Can't blame them really with no accountability

I'll keep on saying that the 100+bln would have been better spent locally too.

It wouldn't be so bad if locally funded projects were happening. But when there's so little investment locally, the UK population coughing up for a big expensive poster project is poor use of funds.

There are So many short routes that could be improved on, or added.

Fact is they can and will be back to nature once construction is complete. Eurostar is a good example. The upsetting the countryside argument is for toffs, middle class eco warrior's

Terminating HS2 at Oak Common would be like flying to "London" Southend when you have plans in London, no one would do it. For the love of God please don't cancel the Euston final destination, I can't describe how insane that would be.

It's going to happen though, a train to nowhere but hey, you'll do it in style and pay for it.

It will also involve a redesign of Old Oak Common or significantly less trains running from London to accommodate. That and all the new capacity on the western section of Crossrail will pretty much be eroded.

The whole thing was a mess from the very first.
The economic benefit was marginal and with the increased costs is non existent.
They should have scrapped the London section and expanded all the northern links, joining up all the northern cities making a real northern powerhouse.
That would have benefited the North the most.
HS2 was simply invented to benefit the rich in London.
And that's coming from an Essex boy!

I do hope someone makes a meme or video about the fact that the Tory conference is in Manchester as they plan to cut the Manchester HS2 leg.

Iirc they've already scaled back the station plans for Euston by reducing platforms by 1 against the advice.
Terminating at OOC is to save money by delaying the build into Euston afaik - except they've admitted delaying the build into Euston would cost more overall.
If this government were building a house, they'd leave the windows out to save money - only for heating costs to be insane because they've got no windows yet. And then they'd still need to buy them afterwards.

Usually you expect a UK government project to take 3x-5x the time and 2x-3x the cost. Maybe they were scared of it getting to 1trn and finishing in time for kirk to take enterprise out for it's maiden flight

 Terminating all HS2 trains at Old Oak Common would reduce the HS2 overallpatronage and the revenue by over 10% and the economic benefits of the Phase by15%. Patronage between London and the West Midlands would be reduced by over20%;

Con conference - Assumed the Mayor/Burnham will be outside the Con conference with protestors - or celebrating , do the mancunians really care, other than the broken promise

How many tunnels on the China high speed railway .... and how many deaths/mile ? better or worse than the saudi football stadiums.

They're expected to can the route going to Euston and have it stop at Old Oak Common instead....
Which presumably means that massive 20min saving to get to Birmingham as promised by HS2 will now be more like taking an extra 30mins to get from central London to OOC, lol. Utterly pointless.

Also heard the joke that there would be one advantage in that people in Birmingham can at least get down to visit their family with a direct link to Wormwood Scrubs
