why all the hate for hs2?

Which presumably means that massive 20min saving to get to Birmingham as promised by HS2 will now be more like taking an extra 30mins to get from central London to OOC, lol. Utterly pointless.

Also heard the joke that there would be one advantage in that people in Birmingham can at least get down to visit their family with a direct link to Wormwood Scrubs

Yeah exactly! Totally pointless!

Sunak may seek to limit HS2 fallout with new transport projects in north

Rishi Sunak could announce a series of transport improvements for the north of England including bringing forward the high-speed link between Manchester and Leeds as he seeks to limit the political fallout over the future of HS2. Government sources suggested the prime minister still planned to press ahead with a proposal to axe the Birmingham to Manchester link of HS2 despite a furious response and Tory fears that it would fatally undermine their commitment to levelling up. However, the sources claimed that ministers were looking at boosting Northern Powerhouse Rail (NPR) at the same time, as well as providing more funding for bus services and trams in the region. “The different parts of it have to go hand in hand,” one said.

Hands up if you believe the above?

Well the plebs fell for 'levelling up' so it's just a matter of finding the slogan they will swallow next.

Nothern powerhouse? Oh wait.

The irony of levelling up is that it's basically rubbing it in the faces of the people who voted for it.

So we need to save money. And we can save money by cutting parts of a project but we need to appease people so we will spend more money on another new project (That will probably overrun its budget).

The logic ...

I firmly believe that about 50p extra will he given to local bus services, and several feasibility studies may in several years time report back about larger projects, and with a bit of luck one or two of those projects might get going for a few years before being cancelled.

At some point the 'north' loses credibility if it keeps electing two shadows of the same betrayer and moves even rational, empathetic individuals to mockery.

When will y'all defend yourselves?

Easy solution.... Both Tory scum and Labour would hate....

New party called the North, lets really get the divide working for the good. Being a Midlander I can be a swing voter that decides the fate of the North as we are even more forgotten than the North.

I'm sure Sunak can stretch to an extra bus service its all northerners really need right?

Northern powerhouse.
Next suggestions might be to power it with people from "the boats". Win win for the extreme tory voter.

Anything above Hemel and Hatfield is basically the North now anyway.

And what makes you think it should only be the north that gets any money? Plenty of places south and west of London are in desperate need of money as well, also with terrible rail and road networks.

Well, only in that this was what HS2 was supposed to be about - to level up the North. Although, I've never quite understood how that would be achieved with slightly faster train service to London. It sounds to me like it was a cunning plot for politicians to be able to get back to London faster. I hear they have showers on the trains too.

well Meta is abandonning that gravy Train - getting out of dodge @£126M .(hybrid-working smoke screen by media who obviously don't watch silicon valley response to WFH )
Poor London needs help, maybe Khan can appeal for money on his blog.

Noted that France has £100bn investment plan on railways - greenification etc.
On the one hand, put an end to the aging of the network and modernize it. Of course, the work carried out since 2017 is bearing fruit. But we will further increase investments in the existing network to reach, by the end of the five-year term, an additional 1 billion euros per year for the regeneration of the network and 500 million euros per year for its modernization. For our fellow citizens, modernizing the network will mean more trains, better punctuality and shorter journey times. It is under these conditions, and under these conditions only, that the train will fully be an attractive and credible alternative to the car

So, I know, we are deciding on a significant investment, but it is necessary and essential, to improve the quality of our transport, to reduce our greenhouse gas emissions, to continue to develop a solid industrial sector, because 80% of railway investments benefit French companies. This project will rely on the expertise of the Société du Grand Paris, SGP. Over the la
