Why am I dropping frames on 1080 HD quicktime trailers?!?!

I have a Radeon X1800XT 512mb, with latest 6.6 catalyst drivers, plus P4 3.6ghz and 2gb RAM, but when playing 1080 res quicktime trailers I get frames dropped, the video is not smooth.

I thought the X1800XT had hardware acceleration on high def content, and I think my system is more than capable of running HD video.

does anyone have any idea if anything is wrong, or what can be done to help the framerate.

Thanks

post the rest of your system specs.

as hard as hardware decoding goes. its wmv HD, mpeg2 HD and mpeg4 HD acceleration thats supported.

quicktime is useless anyway.

P4 3.6ghz (775 Socket)
2gb RAM
250gb & 200gb Harddisk
Radeon x1800xt 512mb
Compro Digital T300 TV card
DVD/CD Writer
Abit AG8 Motherbard
HP 2335 23" Widescreen TFT @ 1920x1200 resolution

have I missed anything?

Thanks

If you give me a link to the trailer I'll try it here, I think you should be ok normally. Ive found it can depend on the player, I dont use quicktime player even for quicktime movies if I can help it

Ok that is definetly HD. First off my quicktime wasnt new enough, I hate all that spam that's included included now but I updated just to test anyway.

Then the resolution on the film is actually larger then my (crt) monitor can even display, its a 19" screen - normally big enough :o

Anyway Iam downloading it at the moment and it'll play it oversized anyway. Iam on a slow link but the first few seconds appear to play fine, no hitches.

Iam using a simple 6600gt Pci-e but this card really amazes me with what it will do, for example I can play BF2 with every video setting on high and a res of 1.1kx800 and still get 40fps

Iam certain your machine is far better and should be able to play this file properly, I'll update later to confirm the full download played for me properly.

This is a brand new install of windows Iam using but Ive had hitches like you describe in the past when playing the trailer for x360 Gears of war. That has a bitrate of 3500, it plays fine now but I have uprated my system a bit since then. The bitrate or data rate for this movie is only listed as being 1.3mb or 125meg divided by 97 seconds of the film length. It should be easy to play? I think your problem is software based, try reinstalling a few bits.

Maybe the image quality settings on your system is higher or something

Kirsten Dunst does not cut it as a redhead sorry and yes it all worked fine.

1600x1200@60hz with vsync off - 91.28_forceware_winxp2k_english drivers

plays ok if i resize my window down.

Problem is playing them at Full resolution 1920x1080!! Most of its ok, only when theres a lot of action it starts to judder very slightly.

Maybe its because your actual screen is a higher res and so is playing it properly, are you able to play it fullscreen or windowed.

Is that your screens top res, what update rate does it do it at?

Is your cpu dual core, check its not going to 100% load

Its because your using quicktime to play them, use media player classic and the prblem will go away. Quicktime is absolute crap.

yes my TFT supports full 1080 high definition video and plays it at full resolution with full screen.

my processor isnt dual core, only has hyperthreading, which is around a total of 70%.

All other Divx HD, and WMV HD plays fine, so maybe it is because quicktime HD isnt accelerated by the graphics card

Its because quicktime uses loads of rescources.

ace mega codec is what I use normally too. I just had to update because it wouldnt allow any download or viewing of the video otherwise, they actively discourage any use of third party viewers.

My 2.66ghz dual core gets to about 55% when playing it.

What speed ram are you using ?
