Ive been with AOL for four years and honestly have had no problems and seems to perform to my requirements just fine, only downtime to note is when i get a free speed upgrade.

I dont game online by the way if thats the weak point(think thats crossing the line to becoming a geek lol)

Id love to know why AOL is slated everywhere?

Ditto. AOL are the only ones that offer us broadband where we live.

Add a speedtouch router, and 4 PC's and we've never had a problem in 3/4 years with them, all the machines in the household don't have the AOL software on, its just click on IE and your away. Never had any down time neither.

Is a good service albeit a slow one but that is because of where we live, support is good too, helped a lot when configuring my Xbox up a few years ago on my router.

Shame they got this repuation.

I dont use the software either got belkin wireless router one wired pc and one wireless, both just use ie7. Maybe its the software thats the bad rep by itself coz it is crap ;)

I admit the software is crap, so much rubbish on there and slows the machines down but thats just a little thing, doubt they should be slated for just that!

Thats what i mean, I think AOL get slated as an isp for having crap software which bares no relavance to how good they are as an isp. Actually dont know anyone on aol that uses the software and also hasnt had any probs with the service.

AOL still has a bad reputation from dial-up days as well I think, along with CDs in every PC magazine and the extra charge for their services on top of phone bill. They were also poor as a gaming ISP at that time and had very poor customer support.

Might just be these same folk remember how badly they were treated with AOL and still tell others to stay away.

historically AOL suffered from being the ISP of choice for noob users,
...you would get a lot of grief for just posting from an AOL address.

That and the problem you had trying to sort out a PC after their software had trashed it following a failed/partial uninstall.

The plus side was, you could have months of free trial internet access, just by giving them new credit card numbers. ;)

.

I had dial up aol when i was in my isdn days had been with all the top dial ups in those days and they were brill, i had no complaints the 7 months i was with them, good pings and i could stay connected 24/7 with no 2 hr cut offs, my god i remember those days lol.

Everyone seems to slate AOL, its seen as l33t to slate them for some reason, and its mostly from ppl who have never used em in their life, i migrated to em in June, and they are absolutely fantastic, had no downtime whatsoever, i don't use the software, and i always get my full 2mb download speeds 24/7, and they dont shape/throttle/cap, absolutely nowt, i must have downloaded the whole of the internet by now, and its still going strong unaffected, nowt wrong with em at all. :)

obviously its just the trend to slate em, im not saying AOL is the greatest just never had any complaints so cant understand why you see people slating them in threads for anything they think is bad, using AOL as an example as to how bad a product is, i.e "you think thats good next thing youll be saying is AOL are good" if you get my meaning. (ive had a few beers by the way just my excuse if that makes no sense :) )

lol their customer support is a pain in the ass...... get an error they will say the same thing run diag test 1 and 2 and then repeat, reinstall all drivers...its apain in the arse when you tell them what exactly the problem is and they dont listen and surprise surprise....your original diagnostic is correct..

Just migrated from AOL to UKFSN, wish i had done it sooner.

The CS was absolute rubbish

They didnt value there customers enough, and in the end my connection was rubbish, slow, traffic shaping and being throttled during certain times.

An ADSL Max customer getting only 70kb/s during certain times.

I run a forum and the only complaints I get about login problems is from AOL users. The AOL IP address changes all the time and then the users session expires and they are logged out.

They login with one IP and are logged out with the next page refresh. I know this isn't the same for all AOL customers but for people using AOL dial up and the AOL software it is a big problem.

For this reason I feel AOL is a community killer and stops people without the computer know how from accessing things that interest them. The only way for these people to stay logged in is by ticking the remember me box which I guess is why the OCUK forum has this box ticked by default.

Well I am using AOL right now, had problems in the past with there customer service being rubbish. But when it works it works, get my email via there web client, never had issue logging into forums, or had any slow downs (not that you can tell with only 512k). I think that there an ok isp and great for n00bs and first time users but it sucks when your a pc geek and you know when you pc is turned on.

But for the majority of people out there can't even find the power lights on there modems let alone understand the concepts of drivers etc.
